At some of the sites I post at, people who contribute nothing to a thread but asking other people to look things up implicitly or explicitly are banned as well. To be honest, I'd prefer that over banning personalities."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

It just proves that mods are human and can make mistakes also. Granted that was a BIG mistake. And in all fairness, I don't think anyone believes it was real, and Asher is quite experienced at pushing all the right buttons to get people (what's the word I'm looking for) enraged.
Lord know, I've made some judgement errors as a mod here. The fact that most of you are still allowed to post here is proof of that.
Ming and I made a concious effort a while back to loosen it up a bit. It was our belief that it was what people preferred. Maybe we went to far. But from reading the responses in this and a few other threads, it's obvious that arguements can be made for either way, and almost everyone has a different oppinion about it. Even after all that has occured, I still feel that it's better when it's a not so strict. But it's my opinion and one that is subject to debate. Hence one reason why we've not closed down all these threads. While I may not agree with some of what's posted, it's still good to hear it.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Can one offer a better or expect a more sincere post?
I think not and as such, say my heart has been changed since I had a talk to someone earlier this week, a brutally frank discussion and as a result, have also had my eyes opened
Thank you rah for posting such

It's already been said before, but I'll just chime in to put my voice in with the rest.
I personally don't like how OT is. A lot of threads about fairly interesting stuff tend to devolve into personal attacks. People generally don't attack me, but the fact that they're flailing away at each other puts me off the thread.
But that's just my opinion and I'm only one of very many users in the OT. A lot of the funniest threads are the ones that are also the most chaotic. Then again, there are several threads where people just troll away in personal attacks against each other. That doesn't really do anything for me and it's not long before I head elsewhere. Ultimately, I wouldn't run my own message board this way, if I had one, but I can see that it's more or less workable, and so I understand if Ming/Rah want a place where speech is much freer. Given that it's their board, I think it's kind of going out on a limb for them, but if they're comfortable with it... :shrugs:
On-Topic, though, it's a different matter. People go there for game related help, and that's what Poly was set up to do in the first place. I think modding can be expected to be more strict on the On-Topic threads, since it is a situation where being unfriendly can and will drive people away when they need some help.
I've visited some forums where the mods refused to do anything about trolls even in the On-Topic forums. Those boards are pretty much dead to newcomers, or they generally visit quickly, plunder all the downloads, and then leave without posting. That does not make for a good community. (TTLG's System Shock 2 boards are a good example - despite offering some really good fan-made missions and other help, there are a few posters there who have a broad sense of self-entitlement and a narrow regard for decency for others. The problem is, they're the main contributors, so the site's mods are too scared to scale them back.)
I was on OT for about two years since my "return" in 2007, and by this time I feel like I've outgrown it, or maybe it's outgrown me. Most threads turn into pissing contests between people I don't really know all that well, and the basic question usually disappears. Since March I've started limiting myself more to On-Topic, and that's worked pretty well."lol internet" ~ AAHZ

Over time, as new games are released, we have witnessed the number of people here doing that sort of work decline.

I would however, offer this:
For those who do care, lets try to promote Poly, promote those games you most enjoy, including OG,OT and our core on topic forums that Poly was built for.
@ Vel: I hope we can attract some Modders, allow an atomosphere for growth and exposure, an atomosphere of acceptance.
Note to thos who feel anyone releases something they dont like:
Dont use, dont download but also dont put down just because you can, let those who would enjoy the mods do do, the others, cant we simply just allow folks to distribute without it passing muster by a group of vigilante posters bent on cutting down other peoples works?
I do hope we can repair the damage to Apolytons appearance to othersand promote the positives we have
