Remember to ID and use cover whenever possible. Unless you intend to engage, disregard concealment. Knowing the difference (and keeping an armed guard around you can trust not to shoot you) will get you through you time. Do the best you can for the mission with all priority on safety.

We miss you. Look forward to seeing you again in a year or so.

Its not Vietnam but it is pretty bad, mainly chaotic and deceptive. Things look okay one minute and they aren't the next.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Leave is over and I'm going back today. The government said I can stay for another year, which will make me the longest serving Australian in Afghanistan! Thanks for all the warm thoughts.

Should be in Kabul by Easter Saturday. Now that my account is back in order I might post occasionally from the theatre and will keep an eye on this thread.

          CYA!

I was actually serious with the female question.

In any case, love to hear whatever first hand scoop you have. I know you are more into the short posts, and have security restrictions, but would be great to get some picture of what things are like, the major issues, your perspective, the ethnic issues, etc. etc.

Maybe even have you reply to others conceptions/misconceptions/arguments. Although I think we all want to hear as much new first hand scoop first, rather than talking our own stuff like we always do.

It is rather restricted what I can say but I'll try and come back and answer your questions.

I do have this Pashtun MP who is a bit of a babe, Pashtuns are very striking and tall, who presented me with a pashtun outfit which looked disturbingly like pyjamas just before I came back. I'll have to catch up with her when I return, for work reasons of course.

                1. Read the first Flashman novel? Impressions? Correspondance to current?

                2. It's landlocked...concerns me.

In Dubai now. One of my colleagues is reading Flashman and another is an expert so I've been sending him some material.

There is a place called Gandamack Lodge which trades on the Flashman link. It is full of war detritus, muskets and such. There is a small cannon in the garden. If you order the chicken you can hear it being strangled. Good Afghan food.

Downstairs is a bar which is wellknown. You have to go outside to buy chits from the permiter guard to drink there.

                  Link is here

What's the attitude towards random Western adventurers, tourists, and missionaries stirring things up?

(just recalling an incident with an Aussie going to Afghanistan on vacation to 'hang out with the Taliban')
                      "Wait a minute..this isn''t FAUX dive, it's just a DIVE!"
"...Mangy dog staggering about, looking vainly for a place to die."
"sauna stories? There are no 'sauna stories'.. I mean.. sauna is sauna. You do by the laws of sauna." -P.
