Also Chinese electric car maker BYD (which Warren Buffet owns a portion of) plans to start selling electric and hybrid cars in the US in 2011 but due to the slow economy it decided not to build an assembly plant in California as originally planned.
They do plan to base their US HQ out of LA though.

More news about the BYD Auto deal. The car factory is on hold but LA did give them several million in incentives to put their North American HQ in LA and will make the port of LA the port all US bound BYD cars go through plus LA is still hoping that if sales of BYD's electric and hybrid models are good (BYD estimates they'll sell ~15,000 cars per year for the first year or two) then BYD may put its car factory in Southern California.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.Comment

This is from last July but Porche has taken notice of Tesla's success selling electric hybrids as well as the explosion of hybrids by numerous auto makers so now Porche is planning to release a new 918 which will be a plug in hybrid like the new Toyota Prius.
People are saying Porche wants to dip its toe in with hybrids and that will give them experience with electric motors and batteries so that in the future they might offer a pure electric car. I have to say the new 918 concept car is even prettier then the Tesla Roadster (which is based on the British Lotus Elise with a new electric drive train).Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.Comment

Daimler, the owner of the Mercedes-Benz brand, who already bought a 10% stake in Tesla has now also bought shares of China's BYD Auto, the world's largest electric car producer. Daimler want's access to BYD's electric car battery technology as well as it's hybrid car technology and is promising support from Mercedes engineers in return. With investments in both Tesla and BYD Mercedes is set to be a world leader in electric car and hybrid car technologies.
