Especially give the greed in DC. And the extent to which DC enables Wall St. And the revolving door between the two...

I just wanted to bring up something DanS brought up in another thread. We have to remember that after this recession is over, it is just as important to slash spending as some believe it is to increase it now.

That is why it is extremely important to avoid including things in the stimulus package that in effect require perpetual funding in the future, which accounts for must of the program spending many are objecting to (especially if a year of two of it leads to people feeling entitled).

Glad to see the republicans finally standing up to the failed Bush policy of dumping stimulus into the economy. Though obviously, if this were in any danger of not passing they would have voted for it.

I'd be happy with a stimulus that just extended unemployment insurance for the next three years or so. Would be a hell of a lot more cost-effective than this bloated POS of the Dems are peddling.

Kitty needs to start posting again. I need someone who knows more about econ than me to argue for the stimulus.

I predict more GOP loses next year. Obama is unlikely to dramatically fall out of favor so quickly and people are still pissed off at the Republican mismanagement so as long as the Democrats keep hammer the Republicans for being obstructionists (against anything Obama proposes no matter what) and for be partisan when America needs unity then I see no reason for Democrats not to pick up some more seats in 2010. After 2010 there is a census with redistricting and that almost assures more pick ups in 2012.

I mean Obama can rightly point out that he's bent over backwards to work with the Republicans and all they've done is spit in his face.

I predict GOP will do just enough to sabotage the stimulus bill, then blame it when it fails to fix everything. Obama will probably get re-elected, but the GOP will pick up some seats unless Congress gets its act together.

So do professional economists. I'd take Kitty's knowledge of econ over yours any day of the week.

I'm not sure I'd trust most professional economists either, though they'd have to be evaluated on a case by case basis.

How will Obama be spending all that money?

                            What will he build?

Will he give it to poor people?

The bill is actually over 700 pages long. It includes lots of spending the Democrats have been trying for over the past 5 - 8 years. The stimulus part is rather pathetic but very real. The nation would have been better off if they issued $ 2,500 dollars to every man, woman, and child in this country legally. That would have left enough money from this bill to pay for the transport stuff. No long-term promises at all.
