God I hope the Senate Republicans grow a spine and filibuster if this line of bull**** is the best Obama can muster in support of this witch's brew of pork and social spending masking itself as an economic stimulus.I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara

I think filibustering is a bad idea; it's better to just vote unanimously against the stimulus. You avoid accusations of obstructionism if things go well while clearing yourself for any responsibility for the stimulus if things go badly.

I'm not exactly sure why filibustering and forcing the creation of a better bill this is a bad idea given the way the public is turning against the stimulus package.I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara

1. Aren't Ramussen's numbers an outlier? (per 538)
2. The Dems aren't doing a very good job selling this. The fact is that the case for government stimulus is somewhat counterintuitive. That makes it a tough sell. The alleged pork (I say alleged not b/c there isn't any, but because I've seen a number of things called pork that don't seem like pork to me) doesn't help, but I don't think that's the key issue here.
3. I agree with Drake. Take it to a vote, and vote nay.
4. The Dems are too spineless, apparently, to actually force the Republicans to filibuster. They can threaten to do it and that's enough.

If I thought this was the likely outcome, I'd agree with you. I think it's more likely that some Republicans will eventually cave as the media hammers them for being obstructionist, however, and the Dems will get the bill they want anyway. Might as well just let the Dems do what they want while making it clear that you want nothing to do with it.Last edited by Naked Gents Rut; February 5, 2009, 14:53.

The total amount of unambiguous pork anyone has been able to come up with, even in the most generous terms, is a pretty miniscule portion of the bill. The list that the House Republicans came up with (which wasn't all unambiguous pork, of course) amounted to ~2% of the total amount.
What the Dems should do is rewrite the bill and pass a stimulus through budget reconciliation rules (where you only need a majority), since there isn't going to be anything but a nominally bipartisan Senate vote anyways."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. Reading the link helps as it links to similar number from Gallup: These latest survey results are very similar to a recent Gallup survey which found that only 38% now support the recovery plan.
That's not the case. 75% want the stimulus, but half think there should be major changes in the legislation (which is all but inevitable).

The CBO says that 78% of the Senate legislation will be spent in the first 18 months."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. Such as?
Which spending proposals, to you, constitute "long-term spending on Democratic dream projects" (is that your rephrase of the delightfully common "liberal wet dream" meme?) as opposed to stimulus?
You have said you're ok with things that are, supposedly, truely stimulative. We've talked about infrastructure (new projects, ongoing projects, and plain 'ole repair work). What else would you do. And don't come to me with tax cuts. The bill has more than enough of those in it already.
