The real question is why there are so many murders in Helsinki.
so going by the numbers US with 16k murders is #5 trailing quite a bit behind South Africa ... however if you split this on the considerably big US population... US is only respectable 24th out of 62 on that list...
#23 is Bulgaria with only 332 murders, but considering that their population is quite low their average is relatively high... murders there are mostly drugs related as well...
Croatia appears there as well with 80 murders... due to our size we would be about ~40 on per capita table... the factor not taken into account is that drugs/mafia related violence "exploded" there in last few years... nevertheless "only" 80 murders in total... so I guess they happen where "you live by the sword..." as well... but the public perception is that the society is a lot less safe comparing to what it used to be despite of mafia guys killing each other to reach most of that number... there are still no areas where you are not supposed to go to though...
as for Brits... first it is Daily Mail
and second... well they have nothing to live for (edit: except work and drink) in here as far as I can tell

Actually that nationmaster site seems to be full of peculiar statistics. Germany has over 250,000 drug offenses per 100,000 people, while France has 176. The United States has over 95,000 rapes, while Saudi Arabia has 59. This may have to do with differing standards of reporting (perhaps France only lists drug traffickers, while Germany is just stoned out of its gourd). It may also have to do with the fact that in the US rape victims aren't likely to be bludgeoned with rocks as punishment for their fornication.
