  • Taliban threatens to kill or acid attack Pakistani schoolgirls if they attend school

The Prophet would be proud of the "chastisement" his faithful students - for does not Taliban merely mean "students"? - are delivering to the gender he called the majority in hell, and to schoolgirls specifically.

ISLAMABAD (AFP) — Taliban extremists in Pakistan's troubled northwest Swat valley have banned girls from attending school, threatening to kill any female students, officials said Thursday.

The threat was delivered this week by local Taliban commander Shah Durran in an address carried on an illegally-run radio station in the area, local officials told AFP.

"You have until January 15 to stop sending your girls to schools. If you do not pay any heed to this warning, we will kill such girls," one official quoted the commander as saying.

"We also warn schools not to enrol any female students; otherwise, their buildings will be blown up."

The mountainous Swat valley was until last year a popular tourist destination featuring Pakistan's only ski resort.

But the region has been turned into a battleground since radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah, who has links to Pakistan's Taliban movement, launched a violent campaign for the introduction of Islamic Sharia law in the valley.

Durran said local Taliban leaders were determined not to allow girls to attend school, saying: "We want to enforce the true Sharia in the area -- for this, we are fighting and laying down our lives."

Swat residents said Taliban fighters had already destroyed scores of government-run schools, leading some to set up private schools in their homes to educate girls.

An official at the Pakistani education ministry said there are about 1,580 schools registered in Swat -- once known for its top-flight schools.

But the official, Naeem Khan, told AFP: "Already Taliban militants have destroyed 252 schools, mainly those where girls and boys were studying together."

Education has suffered badly in Swat as a result of the ongoing fighting between Taliban-linked militants and security forces, with only a handful of schools still open in the region's main city Mingora, Khan said.

The government had reached a deal with the rebels in May to gradually pull out troops and introduce an Islamic justice system in exchange for an end to rebel attacks, but the violence eventually resumed.
I have to admire the fundamentalists' consistency, though. They're too fastidious to go through the (ultimately futile) mental gymnastics the moderates have to to reconcile their fundamentally irreconcilable commitments to modernity and Islam.

Oh, and they offer a hundred thousand Pakistani rupees to anybody who burns a Pakistani schoolgirl with acid.

The police in Kandahar have arrested 10 Taliban militants they said were involved in an attack earlier this month on a group of Afghan schoolgirls whose faces were doused with acid, officials in Kandahar said Tuesday.

The officials said that the militants, who were Afghan citizens, had confessed to their involvement in the attack on the schoolgirls and their teachers on Nov. 12 and that a high-ranking member of the Taliban had paid the militants 100,000 Pakistani rupees for each of the girls they managed to burn.

    And before this comes up:

    1) Islam is a religion of peace.
    2) The people who do this aren't real Muslims.
    3) This is a perversion of Islam.
    4) This is a "misguided" interpretation of Islam.
    5) It's wrong to judge an entire religion based on the acts of a few of its followers.
    6) Any permutation and combination of the above.

If what you were going to say any of the above, don't bother - I've saved you the trouble!

Judging from the threads you post here, you've travelled a long journey then.

And yes, these people are locked up in their own narrow-mindedness. Then again these people who've grown up like this can't fathom a different world with different values. As much as we detest their views, they detest ours. Presuming they're simply nuts is a fallacious point of view, because it presupposes that you are superior. I admit I sometimes feel like that as well and it's tempting do to so, but it's not constructive. If the west wants to calm down the unrest its leaders should better have some empathy instead of demonizing them, it merely antagonizes the two sides. As there's no military solution that stance won't help much.

        Wow!

I have other platitudes you may also be interested in including with those used above. For example, "communism is a good idea in theory but one that doesnt work in practice".

Taliban, IMO, doesn't represent the Islamic faith in a general definition. They need to be exterminated.

News from Iran, thought to be Taliban supporters by some:

-A man blinded Ameneh in an acid attack after she spurned his marriage proposals. He has been sentenced to the same punishment, in a literal application of Iran's sharia Eye-for-an-Eye Qisa laws.

-Tehran province criminal court has ordered Majid Movahedi, 27, to be blinded in both eyes from drops of acid in response to a plea from his victim, Ameneh Bahrami. NB Majid's family is implicated in this horrific crime.

-The punishment is legal under the Sharia Code of Qisas, which allows retribution for violent crimes.

-Bahrami was left horrifically disfigured after Movahedi threw a jar of acid in her face in October 2004. Her injuries led to the loss of one eye and left her blind in the other.

aint no "pre" about it, I've considered the efficacy of throwing acid in people's faces and concluded people who dont do it are superior to those who do

I agree with you, but I'm just saying they don't know any better. Compare this to me, being European, considering myself superior to Americans because I don't pack a gun and I don't carry a shotgun when I go out camping, like a good number of Americans would do.

Throw rocks (or bombs) at them and the cruelty disappears? That reasoning is just as stupid as trying to abolish the 2nd amendment's right to bear arms in the US.

It goes without saying that taliban movement should be eradicated, of course. I'm only trying to mitigate the militaristic hatemongering

Do you have any ideas how to do this? The current plan (wrt Afghanistan) is a spectacular failure.

There is a difference between being prepared to defend yourself from threats (bears or criminals or whatever), and throwing acid in somebody's face because they dared to go to school. The difference is that people have a right to defend themselves, while no one has the right to terrorize other people.

Always consider who is initiating the violence before you start making these moral equivalence arguments.
