  • The flip side is, with tens of thousands of workers getting released out onto the market, what do you think the odds are they will find jobs? Not very high, not in this market.

The odds that they'll find a job? Given that last month's US employment report (the worst in decades) showed that for every 8 jobs lost 7 were created I'd say pretty good.

That means they end up on unemployment. That means the government probably extends unemployment benefits. This means they don't have health insurance anymore (if they did before) and are using ERs. Who pays for all that?

Well, given that the Detroit 3 between them employ ~400k employees in the US, that their parts suppliers would be quite happy to retool to supply "import" car manufacturers, that the 30 billion or so the car companies want won't keep them running for more than a few months at current loss rates and that unemployment benefits over a period of a few months don't generally run at the 75000$ per head these numbers imply then I'm pretty sure I know which one would be cheaper.

    • It isn't the cost per resident. That's a very disingenuous statement as I have already pointed out.

What isn't the cost per resident?

You have residents. You have a cost. You divide one by the other and you get a cost per resident. That's straightforward grammar.

Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

#2, neither the RNC nor the DNC would ever allow their vote to be dilluted like that

Diluted? I'm not sure what you mean.

#3, what would be the point when one can already be appointed for free?
The appointed Senator is going to accept no pay, sleep in a tent and use the local Kinko's? Senators aren't free. They have offices, staffs, get paid etc.

OK funny man, let me rephrase: So that x % of voters can feel good about themselves, everyone should have to shell out $25 million whether they agree or not?

Unless you're suggesting we reinstate poll taxes elections are going to remain a public good. I'll give you a hint: any argument which applies just as easily against holding a general election as it does a special election is already reduced to the absurd.

But we aren't talking about saving money, we are talking about spending money. No one is advocating cutting out an election to save money. I'm just saying don't spend additional money on an unnecessary and irrelevent election.

So now your argument is a simple status quo one?

Obvious to whom? On this thread, apparently it's only obvious to you. I wonder if that is representative of the state of Illinois?

Obvious to those who pay for it, obviously.

It distracts people from the overall cost, which simply leads to people thinking that government spending is no big deal. "Oh, 100 new fighter jets? Well, that's only $8/person, no biggie

To compare the benefit per individual while stating the cost to the aggregate (as you have already done once this thread) is just as stupid as to compare the benefit to the aggregate while stating the cost per individual. Which is why I've been comparing the cost per individual to the benefit per individual. If I was an American I certainly wouldn't get all excited about the benefit to me as an individual of the country owning 100 more jets (cost to purchase 100 f-35s would work out closer to 27$ per person BTW).

A bridge to nowhere? Well, I dunno, but if you're sure it only costs me $.50, then I guess it's not worth arguing about."

Actually, it really isn't. If you as a private individual get worked up about things like that then you might have a personality disorder of some kind. I would have that checked out.

At least smart enough not to commits crimes in buggable electronic communications.
It's even worse. Blago publicly dared the authorities to wire tap him, stating he was clean and any such tapping would prove it. And here I thought Spitzer was the biggest self-destructive political moron...

                      b) The thought that cutting 25 mill from the Illinois state budget by skimping on elections is the best way to go is retarded. The state of Illinois collects about 40 billion dollars in revenue each year. I guarantee there are things costing 25 million dollars in there which are better to get rid of than elections

                      c) I can't believe I'm even having this discussion. None of your points apply overmuch to a special election compared with a general election.

Not even close. New Jersey is easily the most corrupt state, and Chicago doesn't even place in the running against any Southern state. Chicagoans are just worse at it, so they get caught more.
Heartland fake commie: I done my Chi-town time and I done my VA time. No contest. I still remember Officer Friendly in Fairfax County who was like a Canadian mountie (it rhymes). Seriously, he helped me get money stolen from my wrestling locker and we put some loser in jail...in the big house. And in Evanston, that fat fvcker told my (soon to be) gf not to file a police report.
