But it seems they are only censoring according to the local country's laws (at least that's what I get from pg 1, not reading further). So they are catering to both.

Why is that catering to me? I think that lese majeste laws are bull****, for instance, and think less of Google for towing Thailand's line.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

And this YouTube censorship will make me less trusting of Google's web search results -- Google's golden goose.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Yeeeeeah... why don't you also tell that to the brick and mortar stores and see how well international commerce works with that.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

As far as I know, there are no YouTube servers in Thailand.
Google needs to grow a spine in order to maintain my trust.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. That's fine... the rest of us trust it more than enough to offset you
I don't consider following local law to be lacking a spine, as I don't think Google should be in the business of deciding what is valid free speech law overseas.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The article is crap.
Its entire point is a false analogy, suggesting that since google (+youtube) are the most popular sites on the net, then their redaction policy is somehow an ethical threat to the concept of free speech, and that google somehow carries the responsibility for free speech on the internet.
this is incredible bull****.
there is no question that youtube is under no obligation, legal or ethical for youtube to carry porn, atrocities, hate-content, copy-righted material or what ever someone wants to publish.
The right to free speech does not force any newspaper to publish your rambling. nor do newspapers carry any responsibility to carry all opposing views, if they consider some stupid or illegal and unfit.
google's service relies on quality of results. the entire point of a ranking algorithm is to prefer some sources information over another. there is no real objectivity when google prefers government or academic sites over others.

I was always taught that the choice there was stylistic. I sometimes put it in, sometimes not. I am open to correction on this, however.
EDIT: seems you are correct. Will attempt to be consistent from now on. Sorry for subjecting you to that.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET
