As far as Ontario being overrepresented by government interest, consider what I read in another commentary recently - if you added up the populations of the 8 provinces and 3 territories as of 2008 aside from Ontario and Quebec - their combined population is 12.6 million people. Ontario's population alone is 12.9 million. How else do you think that Chretien managed majorities despite the strength of the Reform in the West? By winning Ontario massively.
But this is precisely why the West feels alienated. The political leanings are significantly different and the population of central Canada is too massive to compete with.
Remind me why we're one big country again? It needs to be a balance if you want to keep everyone happy. Keep throwing Alberta's money at failing auto makers in Ontario if you want to see how long they'll put up with it...
