Except as soon as the crisis hit the union just unilaterally gave up the jobs bank because they wanted to make sure the company survived. It's gone. The union gave it up in exchange for nothing.

In short the union has acted extremely fair and understanding to help out GM in its time of need.

It was extremely unfair to ask for such bull**** to begin with. It's the kind of **** that got GM in the mess it's in.

      • The problem has been solved so it isn't fruitful to rehash the past. As I said problem solved and solving problems should be what this is about not whining about past mistakes.

        • Majority of Public Opposes Auto Rescue
Poll Finds Most Blame Industry for Problems, Believe Failure Won't Hurt Economy

Most Americans continue to oppose a government-backed rescue plan for Detroit's Big Three automakers as majorities blame the industry for its own problems and are unconvinced failure would hurt the economy, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Overall, 55 percent of those polled oppose the latest plan that Chrysler, Ford and General Motors executives pitched to Congress last week, on par with public opposition to earlier, pricier efforts. But with 42 percent support, the new request for up to $14 billion in emergency loans has more backers than previous proposals to secure up to $34 billion in loan guarantees.

But as with the earlier bids, those who strongly oppose the measure greatly outnumber those who are strongly supportive.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Yes it is. The UAW is evil and exploitative, that's not going to change. They do this just to help them survive in the short term, once things get better you can get your ass they'll be continuing their assraping cowboyism.

              • So what? 70% opposed the Wall St bailout but that happened. I've seen other polls which show 49% in support of the auto bailout so the fact is it is damn near a majority and certainly enough the Senators outside of the South won't face much of a backlash.

                  • My congresscritter voted against the wall street bailout but for the auto bailout. His email response to me (asking him to vote no) started with:

"I began with the premise that the 'Big Three' are the linchpin of American industry."

                    FAIL. I lost some respect.

                    • I'm highly tempted to ask my congresscritter how he voted, but given it's Jesse Jackson Jr., I'm fairly sure I know the answer.

                            • Chrysler and GM are trying innovative ways to get car loans for customers and so sell cars. They've started teaming up with credit unions in hopes that these smaller lending institutions will actually be able to make car loans to people.
