Watch Clint Eastwood in "Behold, a Pale Horseman" and you'll see Yojimbo's plot rendered as gunfights instead of sword fights. Essentially the revenge of a wronged dangerous man. Both movies are good in my view, but I could relate to the Eastwood flick a little better.

As of 30 March 2007 it had grossed over $593,352,994 globally,[53] breaking both the domestic and international box office records of Die Another Day.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an aggregate rating of 94%, the highest rating for a wide-release of the year. It is the fifth-highest rating for a Bond film on the site behind Goldfinger which received a 95%, The Spy Who Loved Me and From Russia with Love which both received a 96%,[70][71] and Dr. No, with a 97% score.[72] Metacritic gave the movie a Metascore of 81, signifying "Universal Acclaim."[73] Entertainment Weekly named the film as the fifth best of the series,[74]
Huh, who knew. For the record, I don't put much stock in box office gross, but Rotten Tomatoes rarely completly steers me wrong. As for the film, I recall thinking most of it was a complete snooze-fest. I caught it on cable recently and decided to give it another try (which is why I bothered posting about it) -- I picked it up with the psychoanalysis on the train and made it through most of the card stuff before I shut it off. The whole Texas hold 'em thing just seemed like a way-too-late attempt to cash in on the waning World Series of Poker fad. In a more general sense, I guess I just like my Bond smooth and cool rather than hotheaded and brutal.
The whole book vs. film thing is really beside the point -- the bond books may be great but if I'm understanding correctly (and I mostly just skimmed the posts) they bear little real relationship to most of the films.
The undeserving maintain power by promoting hysteria.

Eh? It was "A Fistful of Dollars" (Per un pugno di dollari) that ripped off Yojimbo.

More on the still want to see list:
Das Boot
Fargo

Ooooooh yessss!
Das Boot (in German) is better than The Boat (in English). Don't ask me why. It just is.
I saw Das Boot (German w/subtitles) back when I was in college. The auditorium was packed, and the heaters seemed to be working overtime, so it ended up being quite hot in there. It provided good atmosphere when added to the tension in the movie.

For obvious reasons, the movie companies do.
The whole Texas hold 'em thing just seemed like a way-too-late attempt to cash in on the waning World Series of Poker fad.
Because playing baccarat, which is a game just about no one knows or really plays anymore, would have seemed... realistic?

Pierce Brosnan was pretty smooth and cool. His Bond movies also sucked.
Connery was far more brutal than the Bonds that came after him.

Baccarat would have made much more sense in the movie's context than Texas Hold 'em did. Baccarat is an extremely high-roller-oriented game, favored by the richest and snoodiest of gamblers. Players stand to win or lose far more money playing Baccarat.
