I haven't seen Quantum, but Casino Royale was awful.

I know: let's make Bond a sadistic asswad and have him spend an entire movie playing poker!

      Wow.

You mean like the first Bond book?

Hidden tiger crouching dragon or whatever the hell it was called. No desire to see it either.

I saw blade runner (many times) and still don't see why everyone thinks it's a great movie.

Saw Shawshank and concur that it's a great movie.
The only non action or non comedy movie in my top 10.

Sorry, don't read Bond books -- that's a bit like reading Star Wars novels.

Ummmmm, you do know Bond was a book before there was the movies, right? Ian Fleming? Great spy thriller writer? Generally much better books than the movies, with a few exceptions on both sides?

By the way, Imran, what did you think of QoS?

Normally, I dislike martial arts movies but Crouching Tiger was pretty good. The anti-grav fighting was kinda cool. It's not a must-see, but it's watchable.

I'm aware, but I've always regarded the Bond films as total popcorn fare -- the kind of material that works better as a film regardless of that fact that the book came first. If the books are actually better than the movies they must be very different. And if making the movies more closely mirror the books results in "Casino Royale" then they should scrap that idea.

I agree. Except the anti-grav parts, I didn't like those. But the dojo and restaurant scenes:

Any sport where they have to try to entertain you with a cartoon character, midget races, and lots of flashing lights has got to be pretty boring. OTOH the fans were interesting enough in places to distact me from trying to figure out why they pay outfielders so much money.

I like the new Bond, I was very tired of the effeminate PC varieties. Bond is a government killer he should look and act the part.

It was alright. Wasn't as good as Casino Royale, but quite clearly a bridge movie (like the 2nd in a trilogy feel). The action scenes were slightly annoying as they had the quick cuts that seems to be popular. But I like the story (others seem to think there was no plot at all, but I find that complaint to be utterly silly).

You mean aside from the almost universal critical acclaim and box office success "Casino Royale" received?

                          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Royale_(2006_film)

As of 30 March 2007 it had grossed over $593,352,994 globally,[53] breaking both the domestic and international box office records of Die Another Day.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an aggregate rating of 94%, the highest rating for a wide-release of the year. It is the fifth-highest rating for a Bond film on the site behind Goldfinger which received a 95%, The Spy Who Loved Me and From Russia with Love which both received a 96%,[70][71] and Dr. No, with a 97% score.[72] Metacritic gave the movie a Metascore of 81, signifying "Universal Acclaim."[73] Entertainment Weekly named the film as the fifth best of the series,[74]

Never saw any of the Godfather movies. (I gather that III is unnecessary.)
More on the still want to see list:
                            Da Boot
                            Fargo
                            Full Metal Jacket

                            "Must-see" films I haven't seen and don't especially care:
                            Silence of the Lambs
                            Fight Club
                            Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011
RIP lest we forget... SG (2) and LaFayette -- Civ2 Succession Games Brothers-in-Arms

I'll leave the part about casino royale not sucking to Imran. However, bookwise, the books are very different for several reasons. First off, many of the 'books' are short stories (like Quantum of Solace, which has no relation to the movie other than the name and title character). Small, self-contained plot, all the usual interesting elements of a short thriller. Secondly, the longer novels are much more introspective than the movies, and have much more of a moral/ethical point to them - in this case, somewhat similar to the Daniel Craig movies, which does not work as well on film (both because of the structure of the series, which requires certain less complex elements to be present such as 'moronic bad guys for bond to kill easily', and the simple fact that ethical/moral plots don't translate well to film in general due to the inability to easily translate characters' thoughts on screen in a way that satisfies viewers and studio execs). Finally, the books were written in the post-WWII time period, and benefited from the time periods' fascination with espionage that is not quite as en vogue in the current day; today it is more about action, and having a spy who actually spies instead of just going in and killing people no longer is popular, sadly.
