Seems to me we all pretty much agree GM is already dead, but simply hasn't hit the ground yet. Chrysler is apparently FUBAR as well.

Ok, can Ford be saved? Is it worth saving? If so, why not do some triage here...

You have to ask the UAW, which effectively owns Detroit. Ford could be saved today if it sat down with the UAW and negotiated a sane labor agreement.

          forgot the snippet

General Motors Corp. fell toward its lowest since the 1930s after U.S. lawmakers deadlocked on an auto-industry bailout, raising the prospect it could run out of cash before a new Congress can come to the rescue next year. Ford tumbled to a 28-year low.

"Deadlocked on an auto-industry bailout" is a delicate way of putting it. If they don't even push the bill out of committee and put it up for a test vote, this suggests that even the Democrats are lining up against it.

Obama's certainly weighing his words carefully.

Despite his pronouncement at the press conference a while back it looks like he isn't pushing it too hard, thankfully.

                        From the New York Times...

The House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi of California, and the Senator majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, at a joint news conference, said that any legislative proposal put to a vote this week would fail, and they leveled scathing criticism at the executives, including pointed barbs at the corporate titans for flying to Washington this week on private jets.

The comments indicated that when the auto executives wrapped up two days of hearings here, they had hurt rather than helped their cause. Lawmakers who just days ago had supported providing aid instead said that they were now unconvinced that taxpayer money could save the industry from disaster.

These CEOs deserve a raise, as far as I'm concerned.

Hey, give Congress a smidge of credit there. They managed to see the obvious. This constitutes an improvement.

That's not the way I read the situation. The Michigan lawmakers were going to go with the GOP plan, against which the Dem leadership had been arguing for weeks and which would have split the Dem constituencies (UAW/Michigan versus the environmentalists). So they got out ahead of the deal to spike it.

For my own account, I hope there is enough gridlock to make any deal impossible. And I hope the CEOs poison the well enough that no bailout happens after Obama assumes office. They are giving it their best, to be sure.
