Like all law, it depends on those enforcing it - even the article states that Sharia law prohibits finding a 13 year old guilty of adultery, so while the stonning was done in the name of Sharia law, it contradicted it.

The west should be supporting moderate clrics trying to update interpretations of Sharia law to bring them more in line with modern civil law, as opposed to knee jerk condemnations of the term "Sharia" used by people who probably don't know more than the fact that it is the name given to Islamic law.

Also, I feel a "I told you so" coming on, given how poorly the US approved Ethiopian invasion and its aftermath have gone for the people of Somalia.

Stories like this make me feel ill.

In college my emphasis was on Islamic extremists (aka the Taliban) with a special interest in the treatment of women and children. Even though I read hundreds of accounts of similar actions, it still infuriates me. I simply will never understand such illogical, unfair, and cruel treatment of innocent people, especially those who can't defend themselves like the little girl in this article. A quick death would be too good for these men.

I deserved to be admonished for my sloppy use of the language. Islamic extremists are distorting traditional Islamic culture such as Sharia law to justify murder. My misspeaking is akin to those who refer to jihadists. A jihad is a holy struggle. There is nothing holy about what the extremists are duing. They're just on a killing spree.

After looking up different Sharia interpretations on this, its is clear for one that under Sharia law the girl could not be sentenced to death because stonning is the proscribed punishment for adultery only if the party who committed it was married already. This girl wasn't, and thus could only be pusnihed by 100 lashes (An obviously still barbaric punishment for being a victim).

The following links are two examples of more moderate interpretations of Sharia, which are still tied to clearly outdated punishments.

The US could operate missile armed drones off of a small carrier and take out any pick up truck full of guys with machine guns they find. Good training op, no little girls killed. Just *******s who target the innocent. We owe them anyway.

Drones and ships cost money to operate, and missiles ain't cheap. Somalia's dirt poor. I don't think it's going to happen, sorry.

The trouble with you guys is, you don't let me have my fantasy of taking out the guys who stoned that little girl.

Lancer, I also fantasize about that myself. Like a video game, and they're out.

INteresting questions arise. Is the life of all these people who were into this 100% worth one innocent life? Not an easy question. A quick yes comes to my mind but then again... to me it's just that... yes, women in our societies have been dominated and the consequences of that can be still seen economically, culturally, in all ways. And it still isnt' 100% equal. So sure, men have been bastards all over, but this day an age, killing girls because they were raped is just disgusting beyond belief. I don't get the whole thing about ... veiling yourself, so you don't accidentally excite men. What does that say about men?!?!?! Why don't they just remove their breasts and vaginas and keep few vaginas intact for breeding purposes then?

How can you blame the woman if you get all excited? And many of these men are married anyway? I don't get it. The question about purity and honor goes way too far in some places if you ask me. Where is the honor in killing, for example, your own daughter or sister? That's totally screwed up.

Hey, I don't agree with DP, period. I think it is barbaric, but this is barbaric on a whole other level. At least in most DP countries the person getting executed has done a serious crime, usually murder. I don't like archaic laws, but still an eye for an eye seems way more justified, even when I don't think justice is eye for an eye.

What a weird country, huh? There's extremism, extreme poverty, this civil war, or war between clans that seems to be going on and off, and those guys are enemies even when they've escaped the country as refugees. Then you've got the pirates, what's not to love about Somalia? I wonder how long it can go like this, because there's not a lot of Somalis. It's sad though. I guess they will come in terms after they ditch this clan crap away and unite. THAT, however, might take more time than we're alive.

Well, the country has been in chaos for 17 years now, and the closest the southern areas got to stability was under the Islamic Courts movement, and that was swept away by the Ethiopian invasion and chaos is back - that and famine.
