And run the risk of getting scooped?

I'm getting my name on a paper for the first time. I'm fifth author so basically I made one figure and made coffee for the more important authors.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. Authorship is authorship. I've got lots of names on my papers who did much less than contribute a figure AND coffee.

*shrug* It all works differently. I'm the first of my intake to get their name on something. Supervisor says I should go to a meeting coming up in Sicily. Other people get more stuff earlier, I've known people who don't really get anything published till the very end.

What's your brother's masters in? I went straight from undergrad to Ph.D., so never had the extra time a master's gives you.

A lot depends on what you are doing. I don't think I am on a paper yet, but within 5 years I expect I will be on at least 10? as I have done work that will result in many different papers. It just takes time to have everything complete.

I know people who end up with 0 papers for their PhD (not in my field, obviously).

                            a) physical publication doesn't matter in high enrgy

                            b) I had promised to hand somebody an outline/draft paper so they could use it to submit for a grant. Their deadline was Monday, so I had promised to send it to them on Saturday. But then I ended up going out Sat. night, so I wrote most of it Sat night to sunday morning and then sent it to them

ERh, can someone revive the drunk thread. Someone please. Anyway this thread reminds of those somewhat similar experiences: writing papers with a deadline nearing very soon!
