I heard even with the 700 bn that the banks still aren't lending (they are however giving bonuses to themselves) and I think I know why. With the flight of industry allowed by care not governments since the 70s and the crash of the economy brought on by thieves and idiots there's almost nobody out there that can really qualify for a mortgage anymore. So while they've determined why the problem started, bad loans, they're just figuring out that there are very few good loans left to make. So, they have to start making bad loans again to get the numbers up.

As long as the auto industry is as badly run as it is today, bailing it out only delays the inevitable. Maybe that delay is necessary to prevent further economic woes, but I don't think subsidies are a good idea in the medium- or long-term."The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists."

-ArrianI came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Unfortunately, the loan sharks had us over a barrel. But fortunately, The industry that actually makes something doesn't have us over a barrel.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. I picked up Obamanomics from the library to try to get some idea of what his plan will be. I'm only on the second chapter, but according to the author, John R. Talbott, it is to achieve economic justice. The idea is that this will motivate workers to produce more. Now that sounds like Hoover.I drank beer. I like beer. I still like beer. ... People are saying that the first thing Obama will do about the economy is shore up the auto manufacturers. He also plans to raise taxes. These two things indicate to me that he will be like Hoover in dealing with economic problems.
He did say, once, that if things go worse with the economy that maybe he'd put off revoking the Bush tax cuts for those making more than $250,000/year until they automatically terminate next year.
BTW: Obama isn't another Hoover; he's another FDR. It's Bush who copied Hoover's tricke-down economics and deregulated, highly-leverage finance markets,
