Family: Michael Crichton dies of cancer

    By HILLEL ITALIE
    AP National Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- The family of Michael Crichton, the million-selling author of such historic and prehistoric science fantasies as "Jurassic Park," "Timeline" and "The Andromeda Strain," says the author has died in Los Angeles.

Crichton died Tuesday at age 66. He had been privately battling cancer, his family said.

"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," his family said in a statement.

I didn't know he was sick

    RIP

Well, he obviously wasn't being treated at his ER, else he would have died months ago!

      TAS was a great book.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Cancer? What a shame. He really should have been devoured by one of his own books. It would have been more fitting.

He gave lots of people, lots of pleasure. And "hard" science-fiction writers are so rare.

              Way too early.

I've read several of his books. Some are quite far-fetched (Timeline, Jurassic Park), while others could be real if you use just a little bit of imagination (Kongo).

Damn shame. First Obama's grandmother dies before she can see her grandson take office, now Crichton dies before he can see his global warming skepticism borne out by the lingering solar minimum. Life just isn't fair...
