You do realize that ATMs take deposits, right?
Yeah, but if you go inside often they will fund the deposit right there where as if you use an ATM they can take up to three days before they credit your account for the deposit. Go inside and get your money faster.

Cause some business run out of a guys house has online bill payment.
If you enter a payee contact information online then my bank will cut that guy a cheque and mail it to him if no other options are available. I haven't used a cheque in 3-4 years.
In my experience, the bank mini-branches they stick in grocery stores have better hours than the full-service branches. They can usually handle anything except setting up major loans.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
God I hate it when people give me cheques. It's basically saying 'Here, this took me five minutes, now please take a chunk of your saturday to go into town, go to your bank and deposit it."
Also, why are American banks so particularly unhelpful? When I visited California, a mate and I had a few traveler's cheques to hedge against the pound losing any value (we bought at a high). All these big Californian banks refused to cash them and one wanted to fingerprint us because we weren't account holders. Eventually we found that the grocery store by our hostel cashed them commission free.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Hmm, I can deposit checks at my local atm machine, so it probably takes me less time to deposit it then it took them to write it. And since I'm frequently at my atm machine to get cash, it's not like I ever have to make a special trip.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I don't think we can transfer to other account numbers that easily here. I think we had to phone somebody at the bank to transfer between me and my wife, so that's usually easier to do with cash or a cheque as well.
I can use online bill pay to pay *anyone*, *anywhere* (well, maybe not in some countries, not sure how Iraqi payments would work ). If they're not in the auto-system, my bank will mail them a check for me.

In that case I would tell them to send me their account numbers via email, and then transfer the money when I got home.
It is possible that writing checks would be simpler in that specific case, depending on how much effort/transaction cost there is in caching them.
In my bank the cost of transferring money to an external account is 0.
In most cases money only flows one way, and then only one account number has to be distributed.
All this obviously relies on arranging everything over email, and that everybody has an email address and a web bank. Those preconditions are true in my social circles.
(As I said, I don't have a check book, so I don't have much choice in methods)
Anyone who would send you their bank account number via emial is a complete moron and deserves to have their money e-stolen.
The undeserving maintain power by promoting hysteria.

American banks are unhelpful for the same reason every business in America is unhelpful: Being helpful takes work, getting work done costs money, spending money means lower profits.
I actually just asked my bank, because I wanted to be certain. They said there is no risk in publishing your account number.
Besides, Denmark has good consumer-protection laws (and good banks), so if somebody did misuse it I have faith that the bank would fund the loss without problems (unless I had been grossly negligent).
If you're not careful many people could deposit larges sums of money in your account.
