Drake was more interesting when he was pretending to be black rather than Chinese.

Humans didn't create the owl in the first place. Part of the attraction of nature is its being untouched by humans. Even if this is often an illusion, it's still worth keeping.

With humans, preserving authentic ways of life comes at the cost of human autonomy and creativity. It doesn't help that supposedly authentic cultures are often nothing of the sort.

Hera - I understand you desire cultural diversity but you have yet to convince me of the "tragedy".

It's not always a case of cultural domination. Sometimes cultures are abandoned. eg. Northern Inuit can still hunt and fish traditionally...but many don't. They instead choose to buy Nikes and T-shirts that get flown in at incredible expense. It isn't as if they are immersed in white man's culture as proximity makes them quite remote. They are choosing white man culture.

If a people are abandoning their culture by choice to adopt another where is the tragedy?

That could mean one of three things: either you're a down white boy (which is the closest white folks ever get to being "Black"), you're just relaxed and make folks feel comfortable around you and they forget to keep certain things to themselves, or they have no respect for you and say **** in front of you because they know they can get away with it.
You don't strike me as a down white boy, so I'm going to go with you make folks feel comfortable.

I meant what I said. If you don't understand that then you need to look at your own reasoning.

Since you don't know what I meant by that, dispite my efforts to clarify it, it doesn't matter what you think.

Yes, but the example you cite is quite different from what I had in mind. Lets say you are part of a minority in your country, you'd like to have your kids learn in a school where they teach in your language or teach something about your history. If you can't have that done, then you abandoning your culture is not a voluntary choice, and I would say that the majority of people who have abandoned their cultures through history have not done so voluntarily.

Also buying Nikes is and not living in a hunter gatherer society are not really abandoning your culture, its more embracing part of another culture. Do you really think modern Indians live like they did 400 years ago or they aren't indinas? NO! And yet they remain Indian or Inuit, because they know the history of their people, they practice or at least know much of the religion of their ancestors, they keep in touch with relatives and other tribe members, maybe they even speak the language of their people and most importantly they consider themselves a part of the grup.

Are you really saying that Native culture of the kind I mention (basically a very modern life style just one based on something other than the European civilization circle) is in some sense inferior and is not diversity that is good in the big picture?

I make here a distinction between indigenous cultures and later cultures, if you immigrate to a foreign country you are by deafault in my opinion considered giving up your culture (unless you plan on coming back) but if a foreign power conquers the place you live, then you can't by default be said to be giving up your culture voluntarily.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

I find it especially funny that you think you can just "read" what they think from such incredibly subtle implications, when at the same time you think my past posts on an interwebs forum, 90% of the time purely as devil's advocate for personal amusement, is a window into the soul that gives you a better understanding of my life experiences than any friend or family member could grasp. A laughable notion like that totally discredits your ability to read people.
Darius, you are talking to someone who takes internet quizes for people because when they do it themselves the results are unacceptable to him.

                        Seriously

That has nothing to do with preserving your culture. I know a great deal about my Irish ancestors and how they live, but my life doesn't resemble theirs in the slightest (apart from drinking).
