He was losing to McCain before the financial crisis hit
No, he was riding out a McCain tailwind from Palin and convention. Financial crisis was just gravy. Once people realized that Palin was a low-functioning ****** and forgot about the convention McCain was set on another slide.
The dude just raised 150 million dollars in 30 days. Five million a day. They have dozens of field offices in every state. Twice the ground game of Bush 2000/04. Four times that of McCain.
Oh, I agree that the fundraising and GOTV arms of the Obama campaign have been excellent. I was limiting my criticism to the actual strategy of the campaign, which seems less that stellar. I'm not sure they would've won even with their massive money and ground game advantages if Fanne/Freddie and Lehman had crapped out at the start of November instead of the start of September.

Well, there's also the argument that only Obama's really run a net-roots campaign, something that Dean started way back when.
That's his contribution. He took a misfit Dean idea and made it work spectacularly.
Biden said that the U.S. would face a major international crisis in the first six months of an Obama administration because world leaders would want to test a young, inexperienced president like they did to Kennedy.
Don't see that gaining any traction. I didn't realize that anybody paid attention to anything Biden said. In an election with Obama, Palin and McCain there are three more interesting personalities on the ballot...
You should watch it just to see the CNN interviewer agree with her when she points out that the media would've raked her over the coals for making such a stupid mistake.
She (or at least her supporters) may have gone to that well a few too many times. It may be true in this case, but looks pretty weak after media bias was offered up after Couric interview.
So Biden tries to make the point that Obama "has steel in his spine" and the McCain camp says it's about saying America would "face an international crisis" and he would be tested (Biden says "like a young John Kennedy was"). OK, contextually inaccurate in that it wasn't Biden's point, but it was a misstep and this is a POTUS campaign, so fair enough.
McCain reaction was correct -- trying to leverage the misstep into scare tactics ("We don't need a President that's going to bring us more trouble" or whatever).
But what amazes me is the attempt to leverage this as criticism of the media and, whining about how it's covered (or not), saying "imagine if Palin had said this, it would be Page 1 above the fold." Palin did the same, saying she would be hounded. And there's likely some truth to that. But Biden's credentials aren't in question. He's experienced and respected. Her? Not so much.
This reaction just reinforces the message that Palin's abilities are questionable, and coming off as whiny little b1tches in the bargain.
Just my take on it.
BTW, the Palin piece isn't as painful as her earlier interviews. It was pretty softball stuff, but clearly she's becoming more comfortable.
