  • NGR,

Believe it or not, people don't care that much about Obama's influence by Wright and Ayer's. It's only the people like yourself and the people at Palin rally's who care about that.

voters’ top concerns about Obama include, in order:

    • Being too inexperienced.
    • Being too liberal.
    • Raising taxes on some Americans.
    • Being too influenced by people like his former pastor Jeremiah Wright and the ‘60s radical Bill Ayers.

Also the fact that Palin's popularity rating has fallin indicates that voters are turned off by what they consider bigoted campaigning.

    • If people didn't care, Obama wouldn't have felt the need to play down his ties to Ayers or to toss Wright aside when he became politically inconvenient.

Besides, connecting Obama to radicals like Ayers and Wright would increase fears about Obama being too liberal, if done correctly.

      • Yet another completely unsurprising bit of post-election news...

In a new afterword to his 2001 book, Bill Ayers, former leader of the 1960s radical group Weather Underground, describes President-elect Barack Obama as a “family friend” and denies he wished his group had set off more bombs in the 1960s.

Agreed. Someone gives you another 15 minutes, you try to cash in. Nice of him to wait until the election was over.

Don't try to extrapolate too much from the phrase "family friend" just yet, because Ayers' appearance on the Today Show characterized the relationship no differently than Obama did (he didn't "seek me out," it was a strictly "professional" connection, etc.):

The one state where these Ayers and Wright ads were focused the most was Pennsylvania. Obama won by 10 points.

There's no evidence the Ayers/Wright issue had a significant impact on the electorate at all.

                    • Why would it have had a significant impact? McCain refused to talk about Wright and wasn't successful in connecting Ayers to Obama. Even people like Darius still think Ayers was just some guy in the neighborhood that Obama only had a passing relationship with.

                      • Focus on Wright. The Ayers connection is tenuous at best.

I didn't say what I think about the nature of the relationship (after all, I wasn't there); I was just countering your reading of what Ayers said in that news piece with what Ayers said in that Today Show piece.

                          • Ayers daddy was a bigwig in ConEdison, eventually the CEO. Such an individual probably has a lot of "family friends" quite independent of his nutty son. The (convicted but no jailtime) former Weatherman Ayers and his wife Bernadine Dhorn (another Weatherman), did apparently sit down to dinner in their home with Obama on at least one occasion. This proves that Obama was working with a Professor at a University in Chicago and they got hungry. Clearly we should hang them both; they are not allowed to get hungry.

                              Doesn't really matter now.

I didn't offer a reading of the Sun-Times piece. I just pointed out that Ayers is calling Obama a "family friend" now. You're free to take that as you will.

...and the Today Show interview adds nuance to that phrase.
