Strache was seemingly a Neonazi (photo proof and acknowledged contacts to leaders of Neonazi movements), who then decided to "go through the institutions". That's why he scrupulously tries to downplay these proofs (sins of youth, or simply calling "smear", or offering far fetched explanations [militia-training=paintball games; "Kühnen-Heil"="I ordered 3 beers"]).

Strache's revisionism doesn't so much say that the Nazi's didn't do what they did or that it was right. He rather bypasses these points and prefers smearing those who were in opposition (partisans, saboteurs, deserters). And he tries to do that only in certain circles. You certainly did not find him making such claims in primetime TV. It's astounding that he did even lay aside all xenophoby in some TV debates. Those who are xenophobic know whom to vote anyway, I guess, so he could stress other issues.

That sounds almost identical to the Flemish Vlaams Belang, whose head honchos also have strong ties with neo-nazi movements (hell the party was founded by one - Karel Dillen)

Trouble with "Islamophobia" is if the Germans wanted to invade Turkey they would have to hire Turks to do it.

There's 2,7 million (sez wiki) Turks in Germany. They'd have a fullblown insurgency

Listen, be nice to them. Hire them to invade Turkey then when they get down there, surrender. Then bring in 2.7 million Filipinos. It will be one big party every day.

i was reading an article today by a british guy who used to work for austrian state television. he said after the second world war the social democrats ('reds') and the conservatives ('blacks') had a policy known as proporz (proportionality), which allowed them and their party hacks to divide up the good jobs in public life and state institutions between themselves. so for example, each department at the state broadcaster would have a 'black' boss and a 'red' deputy or vice versa. this worked out well for the people involved, but not so well for the majority, who were excluded from this cosy little arrangement. in the 1980s far right politicians took advantage of the resentment ordinary people felt towards the establishment and increased their support. he went on to say that the grand coalition reminded people of the worst of this policy and therefore might explain the large swing to the far right parties.

would our austrians consider such an analysis to be accurate?
