Why do people find this so hard to do? It is not like they have to "join in" on the actual "act" of the celebration after all.

So, when other people are out partying and celebrating the New Year, do you call them, tell them you've adopted a tolerant stance concerning that person's temporal preference, and then knit a doily?

Or do you have wild sex with your partner(s)*? And THEN knit a doily?
