  • Halloween 2008

As some of you know (those from the Civ III or IV demogames, anyway), Halloween is a BIG deal for me. A little history.

In years past, my profession was actually building haunted houses for people with the help of my 2 brothers. (not running them, just designing and building them) We kinda sorta worked ourselves out of a job there, and after doing all the major haunted houses, including the local amusement park's "dark rides", we were left with the choice of traveling to continue the work, or getting real jobs.

We chose the latter. However, I kept at the haunted houses as a hobby, and made a unique, for charity haunt specifically designed for children, but to be scary at the same time. Nothing like that had ever gone up around here, all kids haunts being cutesy poo lala crap.

It was a resounding success, and we were able to purchase an entire room (equipment, room, everything) for the childrens burn unit in the local hospital in 3 years of operation.

However, the building we were in was condemned, and we were unable to locate a new place. So, I sold ALL my stuff.

That was 7 years ago. 5 years ago, we moved into a new house, and since the neighborhood had a ton of kids, I decided to do a little wee minor thing in the yard. 120 kids come by that first year.

It's taken a life of it's own, and last year, 450 kids come through, including a special needs school where the children with epilepsy had never been able to go through a haunt before.

For those of you unfamiliar with my stuff, last year's photos are here:

And a video walkthrough (crappy quality, I admit) here:

This year, we're expecting 600+ at the house.

Many of the concepts and in-progress stuff for '08 can be seen here:

I'm also intending to enter the Guild Wars Halloween art contest with Project Nightfall. Building a Nightfall inspired graveyard. It's progress is here:

However, this also marks a banner year as my return to a charity haunt. I have been contracted, just this last week, to do a room for a local school, and will be doing up a real quick and dirty Mad Scientist lab. They understand the extreme short notice they've given me limits some possibilities, so expect it to grow better in future years.

Today marks 39 days till Halloween. Many fewer till I have Project Nightfall and the mad scientist lab up.

I'ld love to hear what everyone else is up to, and to see all the kids costumes.

This year I'm dressing up as the character from the Blink 182 song What's My Age Again?

I hate Halloween. Over the past ten years or so, it's turned into an actual, annual nightmare here. It's all over the place, in the media, in the shops, advertisements and on and on. Before the late 90's, nobody knew what it was. And now all of a sudden, we're all supposed to take part in "celebrating" it. It's humbug! Dubious unknown characters are trying to make it a tradition, despite its having no connection at all to Danish folklore. I'm sure they will eventually succeed, just like they have with Valentine's Day, which was the same story. Next up will be Thanksgiving, no doubt. To be followed by Memorial Day and Presidents' Day. But only if Obama wins.

        I hate Halloween.

God bless capitalism, and it's ability to export traditions.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

I think you are overstating matters. The U.S. will only be successful in exporting holidays which have been highly commericialed and thus can turn a tidy profit for your merchants.

All those stores saw all the Fastelavn $ they could make in October, I suppose. Plenty of similarities, and I'm guessing that is a primary reason for it gaining popularity.

I'ld love to visit Tivoli park during Halloween, myself. Even if it is all tame in comparison.

As for the commercialization of Halloween...

All the commercial stuff sucks anyway, that's why you make your own.

I love Halloween. Good luck with your projects

Still don't have any good ideas on what to wear for costume parties.

Halloween in Isla Vista was great adult fun. If you couldn't get laid there then you probably couldn't get laid in a whore house with a stack of hundreds.

I have been watching (over the internet) the UnO Halloween preps for 4 or 5 years now.

I must say he certainly does a nice job, and I always look forward to seeing what he comes up with.

I just wish I didn't live 2000 miles away or Id pay him a visit every October 31st.

Keep up the good work UnO, Im sure the kids are having a great time this year.

Did you ever convince the wife to do the Bride of Frankenstein outfit for the daughter?

His two boys are actively involved in the creation and the eventual display on Halloween night. They are old enough know to actually make suggestions and come up with ideas.

UnO doesn't do this for UnO he does it for his kids and all the kids in the neighborhood.

Why don't you ask pertinent questions instead of making stupid assumptions?

                            Kinda/sorta.

She wouldn't go full in with the hair.

                            From Halloween 07

This year, Alec is going to be Iron Man (though my wife would not let me get into MAKING that costume, and went and bought one. Something about me making an Iron Man suit out of tap lights and carved foam drew a line for her). Talia is going to be Little Red Riding Hood.

Kyle is helping in the yard, and will be a painted headhunter. (too cold to go naked, so we're getting some sweats to paint up) Complete with piercings, and a bald cap. He gets to experience some REAL theatrical makeup this year.

I'm already building my own appliances and prosthetics for my stint as the Frankenstein monster for the school, too.

Only now did I take the time to read the OP. As much as I hate Halloween, what you have going is rather impressive, in a couple of ways.

So I'll second SlowwHand's sentiment. UnOrthOdOx

Knowing about Fastelavn didn't hurt you either.
