But do you seriously consider Peter the Great a "derelict of yester-year"?

And? USS Mount Whitney was laid down in 1969.

2 years versus 12? You don't see anything odd about that?

        Russian "engineering"
        Unbelievable!

Our country has collapsed during that time. It's a miracle the ship was finished.
Besides, it's much bigger than Mount Whitney. So, no. I don't see anything odd about that.

            • I'm with Serb on this, no reason to knock the Russian ship.

              • What really odd is that you guys consider your nearly a half of a century old ship a "wunderwaffe" and call our as twice as younger ship a "derelict of yester-year".

                • Unreasonable trolls . However US ships are very fine, as are the Russians'.

From a combat systems loadout, yeah.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Then why can we build a carrier more than twice as large in 15% the time? Face it, the contruction of this Kirov is an example of Russian ineptitude, not skill.

Who claimed it was a "wunderwaffe" besides you? Hell, all of us besides you have been claiming the fact that it carries the entirely arbitrary title of "flagship" is irrelevant. It is just a floating advanced communications hub, thats all.

However, it is worth pointing out that it is far easier to upgrade an auxillary system like communications like those on the Mount Whitney then the primary weapons system a hull is built around like a Kirov. The weapons loadout for the Peter is exactly what it was in 1986, and in all reality its only really relevant weapons systems (AW) were obsolete relative to Western standards in 1986 let alone now.

From a combat systems loadout, yeah.
If there was any confidence in its weapons working, it would help Serb's case.

Massive economic upheaval tends to put the breaks on such spending.

I don't think that we're building enough ships to keep up with attrition anymore.

That was in his response to bigger = long build time. That is not always true. The simple fact is Russian industry sucks.

And the Soviet Union was not collapsed in 1986 btw.

they didn't go from being fine to total collapse in a single instant. The problems were there.

                              • The Russians are on the way.

Interesting comment by Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin in light of their recent statements about Georgia:

Sechin warned the United States that it should not view Latin America as its own backyard. "It would be wrong to talk about one nation having exclusive rights to this zone," he said in an interview broadcast Sunday.
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003
