Indeed. That's your problem. Those places that aren't ghetto are priced accordingly.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

What if I find out I can afford an apartment at $1,000 a month then?

        Roomate

You could get a very nice Roomate with benefits near Dupont Circle..............

              Sounds right.

Best of luck, MrFun. With that salary and that real estate market, it looks like you need it. Impressive map, Timexwatch. Going the extra mile to help a fellow polytubbie

BTW, $38k a year gives you something a bit over $2,000 a month after taxes in your paycheck, depending on your medical costs and such. (This is around $3100 a month gross, around $2100 net.) That's based on Chicago tax rates, which could be less or more than DC.

If I can travel my metro, it looks like Arlington or Silversprings may be my best economical choices.

I've stayed in Silver Springs. A long time ago. Partied with the band, nailed the waitress.

I'd go for Silver Spring myself, just because I hate soulless suburbia (plus my daughter's at college in NY and I have family in NJ and RI, so being in Maryland shortens my travel time). But if you're working in the District, I'd guess you'd be working either in NW below M street or SW; if that's the case, Arlington would be a shorter and more reliable commute (the Red Line can be a real pain).

$31,000 would not get me a blowjob in DC.
No, but it might pay for the sex change operation you quietly want but just...can't....afford.

On a more seriouse note, MrFun:
1)Congrats I currently work retail, although in a management role, so it's not so bad and the pay is decent. Even so, I'm looking to get out.

2)Since you have your Target connection, why not work a couple nights a week rather than quitting? This way you have an extra income flow to help out - maybe think of it as your entertainment money - and just as importantly you retain whatever discount you currently have. Super Targets come in very handy for lots of household expenses, after all Sure, that will cut down on your free time, but you'll be making money rather than a)spending money or b)worrying about not having enough.

                              Just a thought

I'm from Bethesda, Maryland and I'm in the area when I'm not up at school. Feel free to try to schedule a polymeet then.
