Look to the burbs. $800 won't put you in any passable area of the city.

Again, you might want to look at roommates.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. I concur. On a 31K salary, having a roommate situation is the only viable way to make ends meet as for as I can tell.

How long is this appointment? 1 year, 2? Longer?

If its short, I personally would store 95% of my belongings in storage or w/family and go with a laptop and clothes. My wife has a fellowship in DC for 10 months starting Nov, and this is precisely what she's doing, except leaving her things with me and not in storage .

While we don't have the monetary constraints you have, we are trying to keep her housing under 1k, just to save money, and have found something outside in VA, renting a room in a townhouse with an older female. I think her price on that was 600/month, not sure.

If its a year or under, I could live anywhere, including renting a room from someone.

              Keep in mind this is actually a 38,200 a year salary, as it's 31K + (600 * 12).

It's over $3K a month, not including taxes, so he can spend between $800 and $1K a month on rent.

MrFun, you may find that it costs more to be near a subway stop(unless you're in SE, but even then new Condos are going up around the trainstops there) than far away from one.

One thing he should consider is the proximity of bus lines and corridors commutable via bicycle. I generally commute full time via bike April through October/November and then part time depending on the weather the rest of the year. DC's weather isn't that heinous.

Sounds good enough to me. I want to do everything I can, to afford living on my own rather than have a roommate arrangement.

I can try Washington DC's website or use Google, to find a good map of the city's public transportation routes (subway, instead of buses as buses are simply stuck in the same horrible traffic).

                            yep

Of course, I want to figure out a way to calculate what my salary will be after taxes and benefits. What's best way to figure this out?

The benefits will be of state government quality so how much will be taken from my salary?

                                Well done Mr. Fun!

I just moved here myself, but won't deign to give much advice since I'm a newbie (also, I'm spending your money -- in the form of my government per diem -- on a ridiculously expensive apartment in DuPont Circle, so it's not like I know much about saving money). I will say, though, that much depends on your car situation; if you don't have one, then living in the burbs makes very little sense, and living in teh burbs and getting a car would probably cost about teh same as living carless in the city.

That's my one thought; otherwise, listen to DanS and Timexwatch and good luck!
