You're thinking of the 12 lb Sov era stuff the Russians are still using. US night vision is built into a pair of contacts and can pick out a heat sig from 2000 meters even without line of sight.

If we're going realistic then of course it would be different...

Palin would be lining up the shot... when out of nowhere comes a moose driven by lustful vengeance for the wanton slaughter of their kin... trampling Palin into the snow. Putin notices the commotion up the slope and takes out the moose, hoping to use it's corpse as bait. (She would surely be drawn to the corpse to harvest it's plethora of useful body parts. At which point Putin could spring the trap...)

But as Putin rolls the moose corpse over, he sees Palin's broken body lying underneath... her hair splayed over blood red snow... hands twitching slightly grasping for her rifle... and Putin is smitten. As a blizzard sets in, he furiously guts the moose to use the body cavity as a crude shelter. Hours later, while huddled together inside, Palin regains consciousness... the familiarity of the moose entrails mixes with fear of the bleak situation she is in... but in Putin's embrace she finds solace and comfort.

As the storm wanes, their love grows... and emerging to clear skies... they run off together to live with the reindeer.
