I vote for the 1970's novel Pillar of Iron by Taylor Caldwell. It's the novelization of the life of Cicero, boyhood friend and later political opponent of Caesar.
It really takes you into the lives of the ancient Romans at a critical time in their history.Comment

Hellada Krolow by prof. Swiderkowna. It was amazing book for me, mostly because diadoch history is not often covered.
I kept my books of Swiderkowna in Warsaw, with me, for a couple of years now to go to her and ask her to sign them for me. But she passed away a week or two ago It was an amazing woman. World-reknown specialist of hellenic history, turned to Bible studies. She was veeeery old and looked even older, horrible in fact. They were saying "not only did she write the Bible herself, she is now commenting on it!", she barely walked, but her voice was strong, and so was her mind. I attended her lectures and it was interesting. She told something very nice about the difference of revelation between christianity, islam and judaism. I don't remember judaism, but in christianity, there's a doctrine of inspiration. "Word of God" is not really word of God, but word inspired by God, humans' word influenced by Him. For muslims it is very different.
Sadly, I don't know if Hellada Krolow is translated into english"I realise I hold the key to freedom,
