  • Recommend me some books on classical antiquity (Rome and Greece)

Since reading Nietzsche, I've become more interested in the classical world.

I'm already reading the only two classical epics which are still a part of a modern culture (the Ramayana and the Mahabharat), and I know much more than the layman (and much less than the specialist) about the shape of the history of my own civilisation and its nature in classical times.

However, I know very little about the two other important classical civilisations which I consider equal to my own in worth - Greece and Rome. All that I have read them inspires my curiosity. However, what I know of them I consider pathetically inadequate given how much interest I have.

So I'm asking for some book recommendations which will give me an idea of the classical Grecian and Roman civilisations. How they worked, what they thought, what beliefs informed their worldview, and so on. I'm looking for a book which will allow me to see the world through their eyes.

Note that till now I've never really read anything formally on this subject, so I'm a newbie.

      Gladiator /LS

Nah, for intro reading I know mostly German stuff. Some of the US/UK polytubbies should know something in English....

Or learn Latin and read Tacitus' Germania

The civilizations of Greece and Rome were indeed great, but China outshone them both. May I recommend you read the Five Classics, the Four Books and the Daodejing/Zhuangzi?

          One thing at a time.....

Though I would be interested, I don't think I have the time. And you have to admit that Greece and Rome have had greater influence on us than China. That may change now, of course, but there it is.

China was mostly free of overt Western imperialism, so Western thought has had much less of an influence on us.

Well, when I say us, I mean India and pretty much the rest of the world. China was a race exception in that Western influence never penetrated deeply into the culture.

Maoism was a distinctly Chinese form of Marxism, very different from that practiced in the Soviet Union and other parts of the West.

Be that as it may, could we please return to the topic of Greco-Roman antiquity?

Which of course doesn't change the fact that it's rooted in western thought, even if Mao combined it with Chinese stuff. Without Marx no Mao, without Hegel no Marx and so on and so on back to the old Greeks. Modern nationalism is "western" as well.
