  • Can you get good food out of a crockpot / slowcooker?

    Someone recently said:
Good cooking requires attention to details, which is exactly what corckpots stand against.

I believe crockpots/slowcookers can make downright delicious meals. This person thinks they can't.

Crockpots are great and can produce good meals.

And that "someone" is partially correct. Crockpot cooking doesn't require almost any attention to details. But I don't think that makes it automatically not good cooking.

You can't be partially correct in that sentence -- his premise was correct (it doesn't require much attention to detail when cooking), but neither does most **** you throw in the oven.

He's flat-out wrong, even if he did get a basic premise in the ballpark of reality -- the statement he makes with the premise is wrong.

      Also, vote, Rah...

              I dissagree.
I can't just throw something in the oven and leave it like I can with a crock pot. I'll also spend more time prepping something I'm just throwing in the oven. Two totally different types of cooking.

A moron can make a good pot roast in a crock pot.

Hell, even Asher can! That is how you know its idiot proof

I have seen good engine top recipies- doesn't make a car engine a great way to cook.

Of course, the punchline of this post is I'm smart enough to recognize that crockpots have their use and can create delicious food. You're so uncultured in the area of food that you've no idea why it's such a great device for certain types of food.

The most serious and obvious of your many flaws is your elitism. You think because you live in one of the world's biggest cities that it's the best. You think because a lazy person can create great food in a crockpot that it's beneath you to use. The most painful part of this is, in all honesty, you've no ****ing reason to be an elitist.

                    Yes, you can.

Get a big pot, put something in the oven at very low temperatures for quite a long time...

One can use a regular pot to make anything as well as you might get in a crockpot, and do it in less time, and with more versitility. Unlike say Sous-Vide or even with a microwave, I have never heard of any dish or thing in particular that is best done in a crockpot.

Physically I can but mentally I can't. I just couldn't cook like that using an oven. I'd have to fiddle, taste, additional seasoning, etc. With a crock pot, I know I'm just throwing stuff in and walking away.

You really have no idea what the advantage is of the crock-pot, do you? The idea isn't to quickly prepare food, but the slow cooking of the food is why it's so fantastic in many dishes. It provides more flavours and can also alter the consistency of food that you can't do by cooking them in a regular pot.

Why don't you give it up. Look at the poll results. You're the only one here who voted "No".

Maybe its because the lowest setting for most ovens is equal to the highest possible setting in a crockpot, and it is not wise to leave an oven on for say eight hours?

I regulalrly cook things in regular pots for four hours (hell, I make my own chicken stock at home), but as Rah said, with a regular pot you can tinker, add more liquid or condiments as necessary.

And I couldn't care what your little poll says.
