You also must consider the formum. An evangical church in the heart of Orange County is obviously going to lean to the right.
And they cheered very enthusiasically for McCain... showing that he may have begun the step to win the evangelical over to him. He did very well with them in this forum.

That's a kiss of death if I've even seen one.

Now I’m not entirely unbiased (!), so I don’t quite trust my initial judgment in such matters. But it was confirmed the next morning. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported on “Meet the Press” that “the Obama people must feel that he didn’t do quite as well as they might have wanted to in that context. ... What they’re putting out privately is that McCain ... may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama.”
There’s no evidence that McCain had any such advantage. But the fact that Obama’s people made this suggestion means they know McCain outperformed him.
Take off the Messiah colored glasses. When Obama's people are basically saying he didn't do that well; that says it all.

Agreed. Indeed, I was surpised by how much applause Obama received as well. Not as much as McCain, but still
Back in the glory days of the John Birch Society, their map showed that the entire world was either red (communist) or pink (communist leaning) with the sole exception of Orange County. Obama certainly walked into the Lion's Den when he agree to appear here.

Absolutely impossible for you, isn't it?

I do believe, though, that McCain had far more to gain from this forum. A lot of evangelicals were saying they don't know about McCain's faith, etc, etc. He said all the right things. Sounded very good while doing it and, I believe, has got the evangelicals up, which is something he desperately needed if he's going to win in November.

It's very interesting that McCain has been caught cheating on this "debate". He was supposed to be in a "cone of silence" but in reality he was in his car listening to the questions over the radio and setting up the answers ahead of time. Also McCain has gotten caught lying about the cross in the dirt while in prison story from the book Gulag Archipelago.
In an interview with God-o-Meter on the day after his Saddleback Civil Forum with John McCain and Barack Obama, Rev. Rick Warren sounded pretty dubious about Barack Obama’s and the Democrats’ chances of making inroads among evangelicals. The full interview will run Monday on Beliefnet. Here’s a preview: Before last night, McCain had been widely […]
I think its obvious McCain did very well. If he hadn't done so well, people wouldn't be making up all this crap (and it is complete crap) about "Oh to McCain $5 million is rich! he's out of touch!", "McCain cheated! There was no cone of silence", and "McCain said a similar story as Solzhenitysen". It's obvious people are only complaining about nonsense because for the first time this year, McCain not only looked good, but looked better than Obama.
To be specific about the story, McCain's story and Solzhenitysen's were fairly different. A guard showing compassion, loosening the ropes that binded McCain, and then on Christmas making a sign for worship on Christmas Day versus another prisoner trying to motivate Solzhenitysen with a cross. They really are different stories. It is not at all unreasonable for McCain's story to have occurred. The issue seems to be that because they both involved crosses, that McCain copied the story but really if ANY symbol would be drawn in the dirt in either case, a cross would be that symbol.
well let me give you an example... I was amazed to see CNN reporting last night about the "controversy" of McCain saying that $5 million is rich.
For those who are not aware, the question posed was something along the lines of "for tax purposes, what would you consider rich?". Obviously, from McCain's Republican persuasion, this question isn't politically or ideologically meaningful because Republicans. McCain talked about why it isn't meaningful and why he felt taxes should be cut across the board, how being rich (which he described as having a home, a steady job, enough income to support your family, and the ability to give your children a better life than you had), etc. He then said "As for a number, how about 5 million?", saying it smiling as an obvious joke. Rick Warren laughed as well and there was a little chuckle in the audience if I remember correctly.
Yet how does an obvious joke become a controversy on CNN about if McCain is out of touch?

Fact: The Facebook's "Pieces of Flare" catalog is inundated with "God thinks I'm Special" pins, "JONAS BROTHERS RULE" pins, Twilight pins, and "Vote McCain"/"Obama SUCKS" pins. That's the company McCain supporters keep.
