Is Obama the real-world Smiler?

As Obama's pointed out (as should common sense), "if you look African-American in this society, you’re treated as an African-American." The same reasoning explains exactly why the Irish-American experience doesn't come close, not even the late-19th century portion of it. Hell, the Irish in fact have a lighter complexion than many groups considered "white."Originally posted by onodera
Obama's father was an African, not an African-American. Therefore the minority experience of African-Americans, i.e. slavery and official segregation, is irrelevant when talking about Obama.
(I could add that the African-American experience is also relevant in that Obama's white ancestors owned slaves, but maybe that goes against my point...
)
Edit: incidentally I just found out McCain's family does hail from Ireland (despite his own book's misconception that he's Scottish). He doesn't have the Smiler's sunny disposition however, so no worries.Last edited by Darius871; August 16, 2008, 17:17.

Except when you are Irish and know that the vast majority of your family can drink the known world under the table. Unlike other ethnic groups we like being stereotyped. So relax.Originally posted by Zkribbler
Yet another example of the growning trend of Apolton posters to believe that sterotyping minority groups is funny.
Expressing obnoxious bigotry is NOT funny.

I miss my Irish friends. They were great enablers.
