As Obama's pointed out (as should common sense), "if you look African-American in this society, you’re treated as an African-American." The same reasoning explains exactly why the Irish-American experience doesn't come close, not even the late-19th century portion of it. Hell, the Irish in fact have a lighter complexion than many groups considered "white."

(I could add that the African-American experience is also relevant in that Obama's white ancestors owned slaves, but maybe that goes against my point... )

Edit: incidentally I just found out McCain's family does hail from Ireland (despite his own book's misconception that he's Scottish). He doesn't have the Smiler's sunny disposition however, so no worries.
