  • Is Obama the real-world Smiler?

For those of you who havent' read Transmetropolitan, the Smiler, real name Gary Callahan, is the populist presidential candidate who is elected at the end of the first story arc of the comic. He's viewed as a source of change and wears a perpetual grin, but turns out to be more corrupt than the previous, Nixon-like president. And not just corrupt, but a really power-hungry flip-flopper who would profess anything to get into power, and who brutally represses any opposition when he's elected.
Do you think all Obama wants is to get into the White House so he can rule the most powerful country in the world and do whatever he wants?

Yes, yes he is! We'd better stop him before it's too late.

It's all meaningless since we know Bush will not leave office! I'm sure there's some comic stuff about that too

No onodera, he's not. Be observant enough and you can see through the fakest of smiles. Obama is not fake, he actually believes what he says, which is very important.

Look at Bush, every time he speaks, you wonder if he is even aware of what he is talking about.

So now people are comparing Obama to characters from obscure comic books. What happened? Comparing him to Hitler got old?

Obscure? What other comic books do you think are obscure? V for Vendetta? The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Preacher?
Damn, Sin City is more obscure than Transmetropolitan.

                  Hmmm,
I've heard of V, league and Sin, but never Transmetropolitan. Maybe they need to make a movie.

Well, I was comparing him to Robert Mugabe. The comparison still seems apt.

Not very often. 30 years ago, the answer would have been quite different. I could probably have named every comic published at the time. Now, no.

(I still have the first 10 issues of Conan bagged away)
