Pat, well, I'm not familiar with the situation. The whole Ossetia thing is out of my scope. Certainly, if there was a convert and change nationality day for free, well that's BS. But like I said, I don't know about this Ossetia thing, so I'm still uninformed.

The latest humanitarian mission Russia is doing involves bombing the Georgia oil facilities.

I hate you for making my side with Aggie but "the sky is neon green with purple pooka dots" followed by "see we're arguing so it is arguable" doesn't change the fact that your original claim was laughably retarded and provably not true.
That's pretty idiotic and ill informed...but considering its you I know you are trying!

You're arguing in the sense that fundies "argue" against evolution.
Again, they only "argue" in the sense that fundies argue over evolution. They're just trying to defend the indefensible. All they are doing is what Bush does: making a lot of white noise to try to obscure the fact that they did something wrong or something stupid.
You, otoh, clearly know that there are legal arguments for 1441 being cover for the invasion. You may not agree with them, but you know they are there.
It is not like you to sink to the level of an Oerdin in your debates.

To get back on topic. Russia invaded a soverign nation today without so much as paying lip service to the UN.
No matter how you shake it...that is very bad.

The problem, Pekka, with these "Russian Citizens" is that they were citizens of Georgia. Russian gave Russian citizenship to anybody who applied from that region in order to be able to claim to defend "Russian Citizens" just like they are doing now.
In what way are they "citizens of Georgia"? They receive no services from Georgia, pay no taxes, do not participate in Georgian elections, nor do they carry Georgian passports. They live in territory Georgia and the bulk of the international community ecognizes as Georgian, but that is a different thing than being considered "Citizens."

As for "score one for Moscow", it's too early to tell. It will depend on what the reaction of the West will be. Even if there are no sanctions, it will remain to see if the image of Russia suffers due to all this.
After all, it could have been a coordinated action with the US, who commanded to Saak something like "it's now or never". Please don't mind me acting a little bit paranoiac.
Whether or not Russia's image suffers, I think Moscow still wins at the end of the day. The west is not going to lift a finger to help Georgia, nor will any but the most hawkish factions even suggest sanctions. Since Russia has veto power in the Security Council, you won't see even a modest rebuke from the UN.
I would think that Russia could do more to hurt the west by cutting off oil and gas supplies than the west could hurt Russia through sanctions.
At the end of the day, I'm guessing the west will settle for a (somewhat) stable situation rather than an ideal one.

While I agree that people, who don't participate in the government and don't receive benefits, can't be considered citizens, he did use the past tense. As far as I can tell, the Georgian government wasn't involved in anything untoward when the passports were distributed. They were made available as part of Russian irredentist policy, so it's fair to say they were citizens of Georgia.
These soldiers are PEACEKEEPERS. They are there because they have the United Nation's mandate to be there to keep the peace in the zone of conflict. Their presence there is absolutely legitimate, approved by UNSC. Attacking of the peacekeeper's corps is an act of war simple as that. Georgia did so, thus they declared war over Russia. The end of story.
Coming from our Russian friend, this is partly true as well.
I don't agree with the war declaration part - Finland has long history of peacekeeping but we do not take attacks against them as DOW.

I could not find sources for these peacekepers being mandated by the UN - from what I understand they were forced down Georgias throat by Russia in a ceasefire deal in 1992.
