It's not really a fact, it's a claim by a VERY, VERY biased source.
Well, perhaps. Let us wait for a more independent confirmation. If the devastation level is really as claimed by the Russian sources, it's quite a verifiable information.
But the whole truth will probably will never become known.

It's also a question whose fault it is.

If you add the number of casualties reported from Russian and Georgian sources and divide it by 2 you should be reasonably close to the truth

it seems that there was provocation from the Georgian side, but it also seems to me like it was sort of requested, you don't mobilize that quick, unless you want to do war as well. Timing (Olympics) etc.. it all seems fishy to me. No offense, but this war seems to be a total BS war, and it is an invasion at this point.
However, why did the Georgians pound that barrack with Russians in it, the peacekeepers? I mean it's not like you can do that and expect everything to go fine with no answer, especially if everyone is in each others range to begin with.
However, strategically, this makes sense for Russians, but it makes absolutely 0 sense for Georgians. It's too weird. Of course they're going to get their asses kicked. And no one will truly help them, we know this. We know this for sure, there's no way NATO or any Euro country will truly retaliate against Russia, there is a 0 chance for military stand off. Georgia should realize this as well. And I still keep thinking, why would they take out that place with Russian peacekeepers in it.
To me this seems to be the key issue, because it is either a false provocation from Russian side, or a real provocation from the Georgian side.

If the devastation level turned out to be as described, it would be clear that it had been produced by the Georgians. Whatever are possible interpretations and justifications for their actions, it would be them and only them who could have physically done it. You don't want to suggest that it might have been done by the Russian army, do you?
you would not disagree that the destruction of, say, a city block of Kharkov by Soviets while kicking out Germans was justified.

I read some "dispatches" from a reporter who visited Georgia & South Ossetia (in Slate) a while back. I came away with a profound feeling of "well that's wierd and ****ed up."
Saras, Well that's what it easily looks like, but to be fair, I don't have all the facts to make my mind. I don't know enough. It looks bad for both sides IMO, but it all depends who the real provocateur is. It's not like Russia isn't known for false flag operations, but then again, it's not that it should be always assumed by default. So I'll just have to be more informed. To me it's a clear cut case, if Georgia truly provoked first, targeted the peacekeepers and other folks on purpose, then I don't see how the Russian response would be unreasonable. But if it was not like that, then you know, it's the other way around.
At this point, I just don't know yet.

It's really sad for me to say, but I hope Ossetians manage to defend themselves. And yes, it's a hypocrisy from the west to support Kosovo, but not Ossetia.

Color me biased, but I have zero faith in Russian sources.
