So some toothless corrupt organization is supposed to tell us how to act? We invented the United Nations, we bankroll it, we don't take orders from it. It's a tool we have in the garage that we use sometimes. Sometimes we don't. In any event it has no moral authority, and no power.

The last I checked, the US is one of the countries not paying its full UN dues.

The US still owes the UN $1.3B in arrears, at last count.

      • And actually it has plenty of moral authority, just no power... kinda like the Pope.

          Imran, pass that joint.

I like what it does it some instances, I'm not totally against the UN. Fighting disease, mediating conflicts, all that's good.

But when they prefer to bash on Israel than Sudan or Burma or North Korea, they lose their moral authority. Maybe keeping the more vile human rights abusers off of the Human Rights Council would also help. As it stands, I can't really take China, Saudi Arabia, or Cuba seriously when it comes to a "moral authority."

True, but that just brings us back to the fact that it's a toothless organization.

Since its inception, how much has the US put in? Anybody know that figure?

            • Would be more interesting to compare it in terms of percentage of GDP. It's important to remember scale.

You're right about that. We can't sue them or call the police. I think that this was a pretty stupid move on Georgia's part. That doesn't mean that I don't admire them for doing it, I just think that it was stupid.

                    • This should have all the little countries around Russia begging for NATO membership. Also, if the big three of european membership, Germany GB and Fwance see the writing on the wall they should ramp up their military power to get ready for Russian invasions of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to help their Russian brothers 'oppressed' in those countries. Then Poland, you know Poland has to be invaded in all this, its tradition. With the threat of cut off of natural gas and oil, likely europe will agree to a 'Peace in our Time' deal and sign them all away anyhow.

Doesn't the US have some carriers we could shift from the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea? Covered by NATO aircraft from Turkey they could put the spank to the Russian invasion of Georgia at this point, like France should have done to at the German remilitarization of the west bank of the Rhine. Then together NATO could punch through and own Russian gas and oil production.

We stop em now or our list of allies will grow thin indeed.

****. Your loyal lackey is breaking the signed peace agreement and invades and you blame US FOR THAT?

Yeah, we do. Because he's our loyal lackey. Just the way you guys backed Serbia in WWI, we're backing Georgia today. It's what Great Powers do. It's not fair, but neither is life.
