It was the McCain campaign which started the mocking and and began mailing out tire gauges with a note saying "this is Obama's energy policy". It was of course a lie and McCain's campaign has been lying nonstop since going negative about a month ago.

It's good to hear he has once again flip flopped and is now for it after he was against it.

The guy simply doesn't have one worth the name. It consists of give oil companies more subsidies, give oil companies more leases, subsidize electric utilities which donated to his campaign but none who didn't.

That's not a policy that's stupid politics. A real policy would include not just subsidies but also requirements that efficiency get pushed up especially CAFE standards. McCain says global warming is real and needs to be dealt with but doesn't want to increase CAFE standards or do much with alternative energy or mandate higher efficiency goals. That's a joke not a policy.

McCain and Obama have said they want states to decide while Bush was saying he wants to force it through even if states don't want it. Example Cheney kept talking about how states only control the first 3 miles of ocean and from 3-15 miles is under federal control. Cheney wanted to push for drilling those areas even if states were against it. This is an important difference in my mind as it leaves the choice up to individual states.

It's funny how Democrats are the ones trying to preserve local choice while Republicans are trying to get the Federal government to force it down the local's throats.

BTW the US uses 25% of the world's 85 million barrels of oil per day (numbers from T. Boone Pickens) so if they US decreases oil consumption by 4% then that would decrease world oil consumption by 1% or approximately 850,000 barrels per day. Do you guys remember last month how Fox and conservatives got all excited when Saudi Arabia announced they'd up output by 200,000 barrels per day? Well, this is 650,000 barrels per day larger then that.

Sorry to say Obama lost this one. They baited him about something petty and he bit back, which makes him look petty. They'll do it again and again until he is associated with the idea that to solve the world's problems you have to do a thousand bizarre things. Of course it is stupid and of course it isn't true, but throw enough mud and some of it will stick. As a bonus, they got him to come over intellectually superior as well.

How can the Democrats be so dumb as to let this happen again? If Obama wants to win, he has to go after McCain. He can't hope to win on the facts or ideas because facts and ideas don't win elections any more.

                    @ their incompetence.

Frankly, making adverts calling McCain a bigot and a fascist would do more to help. The Democrats have no balls and no clue.

Its a statement of fact Oerdin, everything past three miles is under Federal control, that isn't forcing anything.

Incandescents are cheaper per bulb, but when you factor in the life expectancy they're actually a little bit more expensive. CFLs last long enough that they'd be a better deal, even if electricity weren't an issue. I use CFLs, but I admit it took a while to get used to the different kind of light they emit.

I remember somewhere that fluorescent lights contain some pretty bad chemicals (mercury IIRC). Does anybody know how they compare in terms of toxicity with incandescents? Those only have tungsten filaments or something.

LEDs are generally unidirectional. Lazy engineers.

The LED is just the light emitting diode. How it's directed or installed is inconsequential.

LEDs are amazing. We used them at the restaurant I was working at. Very bright light, and they last forever
