There is an subtle difference here.

Anti-illegal-immigranters portray illegal immigrants as bad and at least imply they should be hated.

Anti-smokers protray smoking -- but not smokers -- is bad. At most, smokers are found to be irritating. It is smoking that is detested.

Do you have any quotes justifying that distinction? I never hear anyone actually say that individual immigrants themselves are bad people who should be hated; rather the criticism is always directed at the government and the left for letting the general problem get out of hand.
      Unbelievable!

        Here's one from 2007:

On the January 16 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bill O'Reilly agreed with a caller's assertion that illegal immigrants "bring corrupting influences" to the United States, including "a third-world value system" that "can corrupt the education system." O'Reilly replied: "Absolutely. And that's why the dropout rate is so high."
        Here's one from 2006:

On the April 27 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, Glenn Beck claimed that there are three reasons that an illegal immigrant "comes across the border in the middle of the night": "One, they're terrorists; two, they're escaping the law; or three, they're hungry. They can't make a living in their own dirtbag country."
        Here's another from 2006:

On the March 27 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh stated that Mexican immigrants who illegally enter the United States are "a renegade, potential[ly] criminal element" that is "unwilling to work." Limbaugh made the remarks during a conversation with a caller about the recent Los Angeles protests against a federal immigration bill that would criminalize the provision of aid to undocumented immigrants and make it a felony to cross the border illegally. The bill itself contradicts Limbaugh's contention that illegal immigrants are "unwilling to work" as it prescribes stiff penalties for U.S. employers who hire them.
For more, go to Google, type in "illegal immigrant" and then the name of any anti-immigrant commentator.

Come on dude. You aren't that naive. I know you aren't.
I know what propaganda is, thank you. But if every group denounced as treasonous or unfit to live in America on a right-wing radio show were actually targeted by listeners for a lynching, this country would be awash in violence. Well, it is in some parts, but not especially against the people who earn right-wing ire.

Also, as others in this thread have pointed out, not many drunken teenagers listen to talk radio. I might add that there's nothing in there about them saying "stop taking jobs away from real Americans" or "if you're going to come to this country, learn English."

And the circumstances in Rwanda and America are so vastly different as to render the comparison ludicrous anyway. Not just as a matter of scale; there is no deliberate campaign of violence here, no clear calls for murder, no state sponsorship of the bloodshed.

That's more like it; apparently I don't pay as much attention to those goons as you do. In fact none at all, so I wouldn't know.

(I could go into how those quotes don't actually paint all illegal immigrants as inherently evil and instead just imply that their upbringings and economic circumstances make crime in that group more statistically likely than in other groups, which is a fact difficult to deny, but I'd just feel too dirty defending anything morons like Glenn Beck have to say.)
            Unbelievable!

I'm not trying to attribute that much power to propaganda, but it does serve a purpose, and it can get people to do things sometimes.

Not saying anything else, except that Kid's definition or propaganda is the correct one, and the way he means to use it in this thread is the correct one. The rest of you are getting it twisted. "beat a wet back hour" isn't propaganda. Propaganda is a way to affect the attitude and behavior of a person, it is more subtle, relies on repeated messages and so forth. IF some media had an agenda to have hatred against the Mexicans, and they would be reporting things in a biased way to portray Mexicans in a bad way, creating or strengthening stereotypes, and I remind with an agenda so that the popular opinion will be changed, attitude and behaviour.... that is propaganda.

I wasn't questioning his definition of propaganda, Pekka. I was questioning his quasi-Godwinizing by comparing Limbaugh et al to accomplices in a crime against humanity. Also:

-teenagers are hardly the target demographic for talk radio shows
-these teens were drunk, and I see no reason to blame the radio when alcohol and garden-variety racism will do
-none of their actions especially indicate right-wing influences
-the townspeople in the article claim a history of racial conflict in the area

Elok, that wasn't a response to you, I didn't even take a look at your post. Not an insult here Elok, I mean I just skimmed this one through, missing your post, so it wasn't aimed at you. So it was more... a really off topic remark that I made. I'm sure you know what propaganda is. So, just forget about it

This is more to blame on football being the sport of kings in Pennsylvania, than any right-wing radio commentary. These boys have probably been treated like gods since they showed an inkling of football ability back in middle-school. They have developed the attitude that they can do no wrong and have rarely been held responsible for their actions.
