I would say it is just the piece for the day.

I read a piece in the Telegraph the other day:

However, research has suggested that when young white schoolboys admit to having carried a knife, they are talking about legal pen-knives less than three inches in length.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

That is an absolutely terrible song.

But in all seriousness, is there an actual stabbing epidemic or just a lot of media hype? It's actually not hard to create the illusion of a crime wave by reporting incidents that wouldn't have made the news at another time.

There was a great media outcry last year about gun killings in London- however the BCS once again returned a national decrease in homicides for the year.

Recorded homicides have been decreasing, year-on-year, since the "Shipman spike" of 2001. However, the fewer the homicides, the greater the media focus on each individual case. Hence the usual frenzy.

              Another one last night...

True, it is hyped by the media as overall reported knife crimes are down.

What is the worrying trend, however, is the relative explosion of knife incidents amongst teenagers, especially in London...

The site of the Ben Kinsella stabbing in Islington is not far from where I live. There's a shrine of flowers and tributes there now and I stopped for a look while staggering home from the pub last night. I'm not usually one to indulge in mawkishness over such things, but all of the tributes written on the pavement, the Arsenal scarves, and people milling around keeping candles alight was quite moving.

People are getting pissed off with the current teenage fashion for murder. Especially most teenagers, I expect.

WTF is wrong with these kids?

BTW, wasn't there a suicide wave in some English town?

Yeah, just over a year ago Bridgend found out it was being twinned with Dumbass, TX. The rest is, unfortunately, well known...

Still, at least they are killing themselves instead of other people.

Yeah, these things are worryingly close to home - Lee, Sidcup, Bromley...all within a very short distance of my house. And the thing is these places are not what you'd define as rough by any stretch of the imagination. Although to be fair though, New Cross is a dump - sorry MOBIUS

I saw an episode of "Have I Got News For You" the other night hosted by Alexander Armstrong and he was talking about the opening of Dickens World near Rochester. His comment was "It allows people to experience the squalour and deprivation of Victorian London, who can't make it to New Cross"
