  • What's a good school for Math majors?

My neighbor scored a 31 on her ACT and she's very active at school. She is planning on going to Ohio State, and I am concerned that the only reason she is doing this is because it is close and expected. She wants to be a Math major, and having known a few and being pretty quant oriented myself I can tell she'll be a perfect fit for it. I mentioned to her the other day that a 31 put her into a league that places her above most as far as admittance to schools go. I also suggested that she apply to MIT in math in see what happens.

Today, she acknowledged what I had told her; obviously she did her own research. I told her that I think that she should at least apply to these type of schools and see what happens. She is concerned about the price. I think that the "how do I afford it" works itself out when you really want something.

So, what other schools should she apply to? She's music oriented (no surprise) and math oriented. She wants to major in math, but I also see her wanting to be in music... thus MIT. What other schools are know for Math?

Er, no way at MIT with a 31, especially if the math score is anything near 31.

University of Washington and Michgan are supposed to be good.

The good schools will pay for you to go to them if you are good enough.

Well, this list is the best grad schools for Math, but I'd assume they'd have good undergrad math programs too (kinda risky making that assumption, perhaps):

Michigan may be really good for that, being a state school. And since she was looking Ohio State (ahaha!) because of location, UM would probably be pretty close.

Wisconsin or Illinois may be close enough for her liking as well.

It's true. If you are poor and smart, Harvard et al. will pay for you to attend them.

They have to get their ranking in some way to make up for the stupid rich kids.

If you're rich and smart, then your statement remains bull****.

                    I Agree.

I guess I should have made clear about poor and smart. Although there are still scholarships that take rich people.

Middle 50% of those admitted to MIT had 30-34 on the ACT, last I looked. And, there are many outside that range that get admitted on both sides. I think a 31 would give you a 50/50 shot at getting in.

My brother-in-law teaches there but history, not math. Beautiful campus.

I nearly shot bull**** out of my mouth when reading this. I've known people with 800's on the math SAT and 34's and 35's on the math SAT getting rejected immediately by MIT. 50/50 shot with a 31? Do not lie to the poor girl, it will only teach her to do the same to you when she starts shacking up with the anti war protesters or hipster douchebags on campus.

Just to be sure I checked my FACTS on this like the thong entranced Chegitz poster needs to do more often:

A 35 on the ACT math subsection only puts you in the top 75th percentile of MIT students. A 31 puts you at the bottom 20%, so you aren't going into math or engineering if you get in with that score.
