Well today (Saturday) was our local Quad Cities gay pride festival held in Davenport, at the fairgrounds. I had put in a lot of volunteer hours the day before, and today, during our festival.
Our very first, annual gay pride festival went well for our area - over 900 people came for the live music entertainment, food, beverages, socialization, and to visit the booths of various organizations. The leaders in organizing this event said they were going to be happy if they just broke even with expense of festival from ticket purchases from at least 400 people -- we went far beyond our minimal goal and will come out way ahead, financially.
I'm confident that from here on, our gay pride festival will only get better with each succeeding year. We had one problem though -- we were really understaffed for volunteers but in spite of that, things went reasonably well due to everyone's tremendous efforts.
I volunteered with a leader of OneIowa at that organization's booth. OneIowa is the state's largest glbt civil rights organization, which includes advocacy for equal marriage protection in ways that include reaching out to moderate Iowan voters without alienating them with radical confrontation. We got about 110 petitions from festival patrons today that will go to Iowa representatives.
