Clinton nor the U.N. did diddley squat. Bush, Sr. should have taken him, U.N. wishes or not.
Were the Kurds part of the cease fire?

There were NO U.N. mandated no fly zones. They weren't in the cease fire agreement. The US, France, and Britain decided to create them by themselves. So, actually, the US and Britain were violating the cease fire by violating Iraqi airspace and the Iraqis were trying to defend their airspace. Hell, the UN Sec Gen called them illegal.

And I'm sure we would have been stuck in the quagmire if Bush I decided to go all the way to Baghdad. Fortunately, Bush I was intelligent.

    Read some history, Slow.

According to Richard Clarke, who was there, immediately after the 9/11 attacks Bush ordered the intelligence community to find a way to link 9/11 to Iraq, and was furious when they told him it couldn't be done. The fact is that Bush was jonesing for Iraq, and just wanted an excuse, any excuse, to go after them. You and I may disagree about whether, and why, we should have invaded, but it seems clear that the decision to go into Iraq was made before the administration had settled on a reason to do so; finding -- or manufacturing -- a reason was an afterthought.

My point was succinctly stated in the final sentence of my post.

It certainly does not exonerate the administration.
Why is it that whenever you don't have a reasonable response to an anti-Bush statement, you start yelling about Clinton? It's not like W fessed up to his cocaine days and blowing off National Guard duty.

        Get a grip.

The UN only endorsed the southern no fly zone but never authorized the northern no fly zone. The US & UK just declared the northern no fly zone without UN approval. Saddam said that northern no fly zone was illegal (and he was largely right though we had a good reason to declare the northern no fly zone).

Then too bad for Saddam since he illuminated our aircraft in BOTH no fly zones.

Turning on radar /= firing though it is certainly suggestive of getting ready to fire. Tough call.

Do you have anything that indicates that the UN endorsed the southern no fly zone? Everything I've read indicates the UN didn't endorse either.

However, unlike the military campaign to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait, the no-fly zones were not authorised by the UN and they are not specifically sanctioned by any Security Council resolution.

It appears you are right. Neither no fly zone was authorized. It's funny how you mix stuff up as the years go by.

They were also just declared after the cease fire and Iraq never agreed to them.

I'd like to take this moment to point out that Oerdin has calmly acknowledged that he was wrong about something.

I would like to point out that the idea of Slowwy saying, "watch FOX news if nothing else" is very humorous.

Illuminated does not mean search radar, and has noting to do with tracking, it is for shooting purposes only. It means painting the target with illumination for semiactive radar homing, equivilent to painting a target with laser for a laser homing missle.

The Iraqi military were surrendering in numbers that overwhelmed us. Taking them into what amounted to protective custody, was a staggering task. Actually, probably the most staggering task of the whole operation.
