Huge swaths of what passes for journalism now is nothing but propaganda or vapid tabloids. Though Russert could arguably be called a Journalist, his style was exceedingly petty 'gotcha' journalism. He grilled candidates from both sides and people think thats what journalism is now, the "Asking Tough Questions" school of though. But Russert doesn't ask questions to get answers or the truth, he asked them to test the candidates ability to withstand grilling and nothing more. Its basically a form of Hazing ware the Media Elites try to break the candidate, if they withstand it their deemed 'tough' and are 'vetted' by the Media. Nothing of any political reality is significant in this process anymore and Russert was the ringleader of those doing the Hazing.
Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

He had a long career as a pretty good journalist. Like the rest of the media he didn't ask the hard questions in 2002 but really our entire country didn't. Still, he was a voice of civility in an age of screaming heads on tv.

It is a sad news. He is a good journalist and politician. His death is a big loss of journalism and politics.
