This is because you're being disingenuous by comparing Apple's desktop PC to PC manufacturer's professional workstations. While Apple markets the Mac Pro as a professional workstation, it does NOT come with all of the bells and whistles in terms of service as the overpriced PC workstations. Compare the Mac Pro to high-end PC desktops instead.

The price drop is funded by AT&T, not by Apple (though they no longer get a cut of the monthly subscription fees, but I think that is normal for cell phones). Apple is still charging the same retail price.

I had a look and Dell's best Xeon based workstation configured to the same spec (same processors, hard drive, etc.) as the standard Mac Pro, and with Dell's free 17 inch monitor comes to about $4500. The Mac Pro sans monitor is $2800. The top of the line Mac Pro sans monitor is $4400 and the equivalent Dell is $6000. I reckon I could buy a nice 20 inch monitor (even one of Apple's, which aren't cheap) for the difference in price and have a lot left over. And that doesn't include software.

So I guess it is still the same between Apple and Dell.
I would not suggest that power supply is the appropriate element of comparison; I would prefer to compare, in order:
        CPU
        GPU
        HDD
        RAM
with power supply being a distant fifth.

The Dell you're comparing it to is the "give me your money" Dell; ie, unnecessarily fancy. 980W power supply, for example, is more than ANY workstation needs, even a gaming PC; a 700W power supply is enough for SLIx2 gaming, and I have yet to see a reason to go to SLIx4.

Apple has the top laptop out there; their desktops are nice, but not as nice as can be purchased, and more importantly, built. I'd buy a MBP in a heartbeat if I had $2500 to spare; I will not be buying a Mac desktop ever, barring some significant change.

You are being ridiculous. I've ALWAYS expressed interest in the cheap Macbook or the Mac Mini. Gaming, I got a desktop for. Besides, who games on the Mac?

Exactly. The problem is that Apple has limited options and you have to buy more than you probably need with an Apple, but with, say, Dell, you can just get something like a 700w power supply and not have to go get something you just don't need.

Still no official iPhone sales in Russia.
I guess they want to partner up with a specific carrier, but no one does that in Russia; you buy your phone in a phone shop and a SIM-card from your operator.
I'm happy with my iPaq 214 anyway.

One thing pisses me off about Mac laptops is that they frequently come with 1 GB of Ram (which is not enough) on TWO dimms. Ram is fairly cheap now, why oh why can't they stick a 1 GB dimm in these mother****ers? If you want 2 GB of Ram you have to throw away the 512 MB dimms and buy two 1 GB ones. And never buy RAM at the Apple store. They're thieves.

That is the Russian government's fault for fearing that anyone with an decent phone of pocket computer is a spy. They really have been blocking several technologies and major manufactured goods for no good reason.

Why not just buy a 2GB version to start with?

Apple charges about a 500% premium on RAM.

I notice the base MBP ($1999) now comes with 2GB RAM. They used to offer a 1GB version at that price.

Good on them. It was 1GB not too long ago.

What you would prefer to compare it to doesn't matter at all. What matters is comparing all of those things if you want to compare an equivalent machine. What you would prefer to compare does not matter. Only the facts do. And the fact is that Dell ****s you up the ass for essentially the same hardware.

But oh noes, macs are teh expensive!!!

                                The Dell you're comparing it to is the "give me your money" Dell;
What a load of rubbish. It's a workstation. Very few individuals would buy such a machine, and companies are price sensitive. Stop making stuff up.
