It's no more overreaction than a lot of other things we've seen this campaign season. And I think it's safe to say, Bobby Kennedy's assassination is an odd -- no, bizarre -- place to land when addressing the question of why one is still in the race.

There's nothing pretty about any of the candidates. Clinton, Obama, McCain, Huckabee, Giuliani, Edwards, Romney -- all have had their missteps. Some fatal.

Writing in the NY Post op-ed today, Clinton wrote

"I was deeply dismayed and disturbed that my comment would be construed in a way that flies in the face of everything I stand for -- and everything I am fighting for in this election."

I note that, while "dismayed and disturbed," she wasn't "surprised." You'd think she would have considered how her statements might be "construed" when speaking on the record to an editorial board, seeking their endorsement.

It's pretty clear to me what she meant. She's said this multiple times, so it was no slip. Her analogies suck, for reasons beyond the assassination thing.

But every candidate does something stupid every season. Best to just say opps, that was stupid, it was not what I intended and please forgive me. Any other reaction just stretches out the pain.

She's essentially admitted that the only way she can win is if catastrophe strikes Obama. Whether that means a scandal or an assassin's bullet, she will be hanging around, waiting for it.

I have some doubts about this because if Hillary does go independent that means she won't be able to get the 2012 democratic nomination as she so obviously plans. So now she will either work hard to undermine Obama in order to insure he loses (thus clearing her way for 2012) or she'll push for the VP spot (thus clearing her way for 2016).

Exactly. It's not a question of her intent. It's a question of her basic competence as a politician.

The problem here, as with the Bosnian sniper fire, is that once you've said the same thing five or six times, over a period of several weeks, "oops" doesn't really cover it anymore.

I do like a comment I saw somewhere in the press recently, though: "You know, openly speculating about the assassination of your party's nominee is probably not the best way to secure the #2 spot on the ticket."
