Well you have been carrying on with this thread despite all evidence to the contrary for months.

How does everyone see it playing out if Israel does a limited air strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

And then for a while they were keeping two carriers in the Gulf, and last year they tried to up it to three. They are now down to one, which may indicate a de-escalation on our part. One can hope.
At no point since the invasion has there every been three carriers in 5th fleet, let alone the Arabian Gulf. I would love to see you provide evidence of this though.

Most of the time I was there in 2006 there were not any carriers there at all (mine went to Asia). If there are two, it is because by chance they passed each other on the way out/in, which like I said happens in the Med more often than not and has everything to do with Suez traffic, not Iran.

        You are imagining things Che.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

The outgoing Admiral, what's his name, the former Joint Chief, told Bush last year, said he was strongly opposed to sending a 3rd carrier to the region and told the Pres he'd resign before allowing it to be sent.

As for two carriers passing each other, they must of gotten stuck on a sand bar, cuz there were two there for more than just a couple of . . . or are you being pedantic and only considering the body of water itself, as opposed to the whole region.

Mullen is not a former Chairmen, he is the JCS Chairman. Please provide a source for this epic clash of upper leadership.

I mentioned both 5th fleet and the Arabian Gulf. I happen to have a couple of old Navy Times laying around, lets see what they say...

On 1 Oct 2007, only the Enterprice CSG was in 5th Fleet.

On 12 May 2008 only the Truman CSG was in 5th Fleet.

On 25 July 2008 only the Abraham Lincoln CSG was in 5th Fleet.

So, where is this magical three carrier buildup you believe took place? Hell, it looks like they are not even keeping two there. And I will personally verify they someimes don't have any there.

Please tell me you are not counting gators as carriers...

Nothing will happen other than hot air from the usual diplomatic channels and perhaps some rocketing or a bomb or two. There's been a peculiar atmosphere to international relations since 2003. Nobody particularly likes the idea of attacking Iran, but they don't hate it enough to attempt to do anything about it. People are too worried about their jobs and mortgages to do anything, and in any case it has been demonstrated that the democracies (with the possible exception of Spain) aren't really capable of manifesting enough political will to do anything.

I understand that an Israeli act will be pretty futile, since the Iranians have cunningly spread their nuclear facilities and resources all over the place. If they aren't making a bomb right now, the Iranians would definitely attempt to make one if attacked by Israel.

che, I would like to see your sources as well.

Seems like I remember something about multiple carriers, but Patroklos was there. In absense of a source, I have to call BS on you.

I honestly think he is counting the gators, there is almost always an ESG in 5th fleet and that would get you 2 to 3 "carriers" there if you did that.

EDIT: A quick google search brings up RUMORS of a third carrier in late 2006/early 2007. The problem is one was on its way out like I said, and the other was not in the 5th fleet. They are counting India as in the area, which it isn't. We routinely have carriers in Southwest Asia regardless of what Iran does, nothing special.

Over the weekend, the USS Enterprise carrier strike group departed Norfolk for a six-month deployment to the region. The Enterprise and its accompanying vessels will swap out with the USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group, the original second carrier in the Gulf.

After the swap, the Enterprise will join the other carrier, the USS Nimitz, in operations in the region. But not for long, as the Nimitz is expected to return back to the United States by late September and is not scheduled to be replaced.

In other words, they were all following their normal rotations. As a note, I returned with the Enterprise CSG in November 2006, but the Enterprise was turned around and sent back out just six months later for another deployment. That really sucked for them, but that was the payback for them sitting in the yards for four years straight.

On that ENT's 2006 deployment it was the only carrier in the 5th fleet. From June-August she and the Leyte Gulf left for the Pacific leaving just my ship and the Nicholas in the region from our CSG. Zero carriers. I was pissed, all they did was go from port to port in Asia with a couple week exercise off Korea thrown in. Leyte got it's bow bashed in during a storm in the Indian Ocean and had to turn back though so they missed the fun.
