May 15th is my 32nd birthday and several of my old college buddies from Santa Barbara and LA wanted to have a night out the town to celebrate (my friends are the best). Thursday morning my girlfriend and I will take Amtrak's Coaster from the Mira Mesa Station (only 3.5 miles from my house) to LA's Union Station (ticket cost $23 per person) and then board LA's new red line subway system at Union Station taking the subway to Universal City, CA (near Hollywood) where my friends will meet us. The subway costs just $2 per person and the stop is right by Universal Studios Hollywood and our hotel so no car will be needed as we spend Thursday at Universal Studios Hollywood and then Thursday night hanging out with our friends at Universal City Walk (basically a big night club district in the Universal City/Hollywood area).
Friday around noon we check out and ride with my friend and his girlfriend to Santa Barbara (we could have taken Amtrak for another $20 per person but my friend will take us for free) where we'll spend Friday evening partying it up downtown with more friends then Saturday morning we'll fly from Santa Barbara to San Francisco. The really cool part is my old college room mate (we lived together for three years and are best friends) works as an airline pilot and he got us "buddy pass" tickets for friends of employees for just $60 per person round trip (normally $320 per person) to San Francisco where my paramour and I will spend a romantic weekend in the city by the bay. In San Francisco no car will be needed as the trolley (above ground light rail) and Muni (underground subway) go every where.
Sunday evening we fly back to Santa Barbara then take Amtrak back to where I parked my car 3.5 miles from my house. Total travel costs around $130 per person plus hotel costs (we splurged a bit on that). We get to go drinking, partying, having fun and no need to worry about driving or cabs. This rocks.
