  • I like mass transit and having friends in the airline business.

May 15th is my 32nd birthday and several of my old college buddies from Santa Barbara and LA wanted to have a night out the town to celebrate (my friends are the best). Thursday morning my girlfriend and I will take Amtrak's Coaster from the Mira Mesa Station (only 3.5 miles from my house) to LA's Union Station (ticket cost $23 per person) and then board LA's new red line subway system at Union Station taking the subway to Universal City, CA (near Hollywood) where my friends will meet us. The subway costs just $2 per person and the stop is right by Universal Studios Hollywood and our hotel so no car will be needed as we spend Thursday at Universal Studios Hollywood and then Thursday night hanging out with our friends at Universal City Walk (basically a big night club district in the Universal City/Hollywood area).

Friday around noon we check out and ride with my friend and his girlfriend to Santa Barbara (we could have taken Amtrak for another $20 per person but my friend will take us for free) where we'll spend Friday evening partying it up downtown with more friends then Saturday morning we'll fly from Santa Barbara to San Francisco. The really cool part is my old college room mate (we lived together for three years and are best friends) works as an airline pilot and he got us "buddy pass" tickets for friends of employees for just $60 per person round trip (normally $320 per person) to San Francisco where my paramour and I will spend a romantic weekend in the city by the bay. In San Francisco no car will be needed as the trolley (above ground light rail) and Muni (underground subway) go every where.

Sunday evening we fly back to Santa Barbara then take Amtrak back to where I parked my car 3.5 miles from my house. Total travel costs around $130 per person plus hotel costs (we splurged a bit on that). We get to go drinking, partying, having fun and no need to worry about driving or cabs. This rocks.

I have high hopes for this weekend as things have gotten a little predictable so I'm hoping a romantic weekend will spice things up a bit.

It's pretty cheap. Basically we get a day in Hollywood, a day in Santa Barbara, and two days in San Francisco for $130 each plus cost of hotel. Hotel in Hollywood is $50 each, in Santa Barbara we will stay with friends, then pay $120 each in San Francisco. Total cost for a 4 day three night trip $400 each. A pretty good deal if I do say so myself.

You Yanks make this sound like public transport is some major new invention or something...

          Anyway...

          Oerdin's Birthday
Yanks getting assraped everytime they fill up their stupid gas guzzling SUVs
Me laughing at Yanks complaining about their rising fuel bills
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Are Euros complaining about rising fuel costs?

You need a blog Oerdin. That way you can stop polluting the Off Topic with these threads .

The off topic is my blog. Besides without my threads poly would have half as many new threads per week.

We may be better off for it.

I'll also be passing through Union Station tomorrow. I have a few tokens for the Red Line left over from the days before I got a monthly pass. I'd let you have them, but I can't figure out how to get them to you.

                        Happy birthday, anyway.

When you pass the Civic Center stop, I'll be working just across the street. (Make sure you get the Red Line, not the Purple Line. They diverge at the 7th Street stop, and the Purple Line doesn't go to Universal City.)

I turn 32 this month too, but you don't see me starting a thread about going to SF for a romantic trip with your GF

Yeah, except as we're already taxed to the hilt, our price rises are relatively small in % terms compared to yours. Plus our cars are far more fuel efficient and we basically don't have to drive anywhere near as much as you guys do.

Personally I think it is hilarious that you lot are waking up to the fact that your car based economy is starting to cost you serious money and for many there's not a lot you can do.

Not that I've told you so on a number of occasions in the past... Oh no... Not Me...
